This involves tailoring teaching methods to meet individual learning styles, which helps students better understand complex concepts. Encouraging critical thinking is also essential, as it equips…

A tutor has to be flexible enough to change their teaching style and methods according to the student's learning styles and capabilities. No two students are the same which means adaptability becomes a key skill that a tutor has to have and be able to provide a well tailored tutoring style for the student. Moreover, a tutor has to be kind and…

One significantly important thing a tutor can do is enhance students' drive for learning. I think that once students find someone who makes studying a fun activity, they will be more enthusiastic in their academics which could aid in shaping their career and future. As I am still a student while having closely related to my tutees struggles, I…

Build the students competence and therefore confidence so they can solve problems and/or structure essays knowing they have the ability to do so and can achieve a great outcome using their own ability. A tutor should ensure the student fully understands the content they are learning and not just rote learning it. A tutor should make the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide support in whichever they way they can to help students flourish. Tutors bear the responsibility to provide students with clarity and a deep understanding of the subject matter. This involves simplifying complex concepts, breaking them down into digestible pieces, and guiding students through the learning process. A tutor's ability to pass knowledge in a way that resonates with students is essential. Every…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inspire confidence and a genuine love for learning. Beyond just conveying information and helping with academic challenges, a tutor's role is to empower students to believe in their own abilities and to cultivate an intrinsic motivation to explore and understand the world around them. One…

In my opinion one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and boost their confidence. From my previous tutoring experience, I know that the students are a lot smarter than they give themselves credit for and are just scared that they are wrong, so helping them with their confidence can go a long way in…

Build their confidence. Knowledge is important, but if a student leaves still thinking they're just bad at math or whatever subject, I've failed. The most important thing is helping them realize they're capable - that struggling doesn't mean failing, it means learning. I also think creating a comfortable space matters. Students need to feel safe…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teaching the content in a way suited to that students learning style. I break things down to a very simple level. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is patience. A tutor should get to understand, listen and work along with the students at their own pace without overwhelming them. Also, repetition is also a vital thing. The use of flash cards, rapid fire facts and positive reinforcement are vital for the success of the students.…

To make them self - sufficient and give them the confidence to tackle problems and subjects on their own. While a tutee may understand the question you give them/ the explanation for the solution, it is important they can replicate this themselves for other questions as they are not going to have a tutor for support in the exams ! The most important thin, in my opinion, is recognising that every student learns differently. A good tutor needs to be flexible and have a deep, well-rounded understanding of the subject so they can explain concepts in different ways, depending on what suits the student best. I come from a family of teachers, so I’ve been surrounded by effective…

If a tutor can inspire and transform his student to be better and the student realizes the positive change in him/her and acknowledges it, then the student is on the right track and doesn't need the tutor anymore. The most important thing a tutor can do, undeniably, is inspiring a student in their field of study. Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max practised addition and subtraction with four-digit numbers and explored algebra through interactive games, while also tackling a NAPLAN reading comprehension task.

Year 7 student Reuben worked on expanding brackets and simplifying algebraic expressions by grouping like terms, as well as reviewing more challenging homework problems.

For Year 8, Ella focused on solving equations with x-terms on both sides—including those resulting in fractional answers—and consolidated her understanding of index laws during the session.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing out steps, choosing to solve equations mentally—"he was very fluent with the calculator," as a tutor observed, but over-reliance on it led to small errors and missed working in homework.

In Year 10 trigonometry, skipping units and failing to show sketches meant lost marks even when answers were correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner resisted tackling long division unless fully confident; this hesitation slowed progress in new maths topics.

In senior chemistry, back-checking sometimes turned into cosmetic correction rather than real error analysis, leaving calculation slips unresolved before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a big shift in Max's attitude toward reading—where he once dreaded reading aloud and froze up at mistakes, he now brings his own book to sessions and reads enthusiastically, even when he stumbles.

In high school maths, Reuben has started tackling challenging algebraic equations with less hesitation; after struggling with factorisation early on, he now solves GCF problems—even tricky ones—in a single lesson.

William also made a breakthrough in geometry by quickly recalling SOH CAH TOA rules for right-angled triangles and correctly identifying triangle sides without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Public School.
