A tutor can be kind and patient with the student and open to any kind of question, however basic it might be and not ridicule the child. The tutor can also repeat the same thing until the student had finally grasped the concept so that they are completely confident. Having grown up around teachers, I have learnt a lot from them. I have learnt to…

Learning is all about association. You cannot go to C without having to go through A and B. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to focus on the basics first and only if the basics are clear should the tutor proceed with the new concepts. Individual attention to each student and identifying their individual…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I was raised up in another country…

A tutor's greatest contribution is to give students confidence in their upcoming studies. In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. Being understanding of students' learning experiences; whether it is confident about the topic or frustrated and disappointed when they don't yet "get it", the perspective helps me more likely able to keep a student's learning energy alive, thus more efficiently helping them. Though unfortunate, it is understandable and very human to easily…

As per my opinion, I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be their friend and guide and help them as their friend. More often than not, students fear approaching tutors. But if you have maintained a friendly relation with your students, your students will not hesitate in coming and speaking with you. This way, a…

The best tutors and educators remember the importance of being lifelong learners. I feel a tutor can help the student by personalizing the learning according to the needs of the student by incorporating connections to the students' interests. A tutor must teach to the student's strengths and minimize the student's weaknesses. Tutors should…

Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
