I believe an english tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to offer them unconditional support. From this support comes a relationship of trust, within which the best teaching can occur. When students trust tutors, they become more engaged and benefit from intellectual discussions about the content. Additionally, the students feel motivated…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do is be adaptable and understanding to each student. This makes sure that the student feels comfortable with the tutor and is able to improve and progress with their studies. I am very patient and understanding when a student is struggling to grasp a concept. I am also good at finding multiple…

Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

The most important thing I can do for a student is be flexible and patient with them and build a newfound sense of confidence. Every person learns differently, some may struggle more in certain aspects than others and need just that little bit of extra help for them to comprehend what they're learning or grasp a concept. Being the avenue for that…

I have realized that children need tutors who can hone a child's curiosity into skill and their academic strengths. Not only that, but I also support the idea of fun learning! I believe that it is important for a student to enjoy what they are studying as their happiness is important. Through this, they understand and remember better! I believe I…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. A tutor can give personalised learning experience to students where in the student gets the attention individually which he or she is not able to get in a classroom. Also, an english tutor can help in boosting the confidence and morale of the students. They help in building learning skills as well. As a tutor, I believe I have strong communucation…

Tutors must be flexible in their assistance to students through recognising individual learning preferences. Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. I think that the most important things that an english tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes…

I think an english tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe…

Inside Lane CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jessica focused on mastering times tables and tackling area and perimeter problems using worded scenarios.

For Year 9, Ethan practised solving equations involving x² as well as applying the Pythagoras theorem to both direct distance and three-dimensional contexts, often using diagrams to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zoe explored applications of trigonometric functions—solving for unknown sides with sine, cosine, and tangent—and worked through angle of elevation and depression questions in real-world settings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student often missed negative signs when rearranging equations—"be more careful with the positive and negative signs," as a tutor observed—which led to incorrect solutions even after correct initial steps.

A Year 9 student showed hesitation expressing probability answers as decimals or fractions, sometimes switching formats mid-question, which muddled final answers.

In senior trigonometry, confusion persisted between cosine and tangent when identifying sides of triangles, resulting in misapplied formulas and lost marks.

Meanwhile, a primary learner avoided showing long division working, likely from lack of confidence with times tables; this meant partial answers but no path for error-checking or feedback.

Recent Achievements

One Lane Cove tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated with word problems now breaking down multi-step questions independently and spotting which details are relevant.

In Year 10, a student who used to confuse the gradient and y-intercept in linear equations can now correctly identify each part and graph the line without prompting.

Another recent session with a primary schooler showed real change: after weeks of struggling, she remembers far more of her times tables and tackled two-digit multiplication with much less reliance on written prompts, even choosing to try a harder problem herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lane Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lane Cove Public School.
