I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I will not be "above" them,…

I see my role as a tutor to guide my students, providing them with the strategies necessary to develop their knowledge and understanding. I think its important to be patient and allow students to build their own understanding with my guidance. I also think that it is important to be a good role model for students. As a student myself, I…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. For example, once students feel doubting about the topic they have studied at school, the tutor should explain where the students have not understood and make sure to move on once they understand…

Teachers are considered as one of the people who shape someone's future or career. By giving good pieces of advice by basing myself on my personal experience as a student, I'll make sure that the student is always on the right track. Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

I believe that the overarching role of a tutor is to have a lasting, positive impact on a student, and this is possible through various means. Firstly, they can support the student academically, by guiding them through difficult or foreign concepts step-by-step. Through this, a tutor can immensely improve a student's self-confidence and engagement…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

Jenny is an excellent tutor. She was incredibly patient with Zoe and a really good teacher. Zoe was really happy and confident working with her and felt safe to ask questions and sometimes because of her illness she could not really concentrate but Jenny stayed patient and really worked well with her. I highly recommend Jenny.

Inside MalvernTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Dishita focused on normal distribution and the 68-95-99.7 rule using past exam questions, as well as in-depth work on time series analysis and deseasonalisation techniques from VCAA practice exams.

Year 11 student Bianca tackled tricky measurement and geometry problems, including surface area and volume of complex shapes, while also consolidating understanding of bearings with targeted homework from recent chapters.

For Year 3 student Ari, sessions concentrated on multiplication facts through card games and hands-on division activities, along with visual strategies for solving fraction problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly avoided highlighting or writing out key information in data analysis and regression exam questions, which led to confusion about what was actually being asked. As one tutor noted, "she needs to highlight the key points in the question to guide her understanding." This meant she often had to reread questions multiple times, losing valuable time and sometimes missing marks for incomplete answers.

In Year 3 mathematics, a student's messy note-taking made it difficult to spot calculation errors in subtraction problems; attempts to improve layout during lessons helped but were not consistently carried into homework.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern recently noticed Dishita, a senior student, applying the 'talk-aloud' strategy to break down complex normal distribution problems—something she previously found overwhelming. She now highlights key points and selects relevant formulas independently when tackling exam-style questions.

Rose, in upper primary, had been struggling with long division steps; after working through a step-by-step method together, she can now solve these problems on her own with just the occasional slip.

Meanwhile, Ari in Year 3 has shifted from needing frequent breaks during number tasks to persisting through challenging multiplication problems using mental strategies before reaching for visual aids.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malvern Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
