I think the most important thing as a tutor is encouraging the student to want to learn, and to actively seek out explanations and ask questions. Even if a tutor can explain something very clearly, a student who does not want to learn will probaly not pay much attention, and the explanations will go over their head. By building a rapport with them…

I try to teach the content I know in different ways so that each student can understand what I teach in their own way. I am also very patient and understanding and know to cater to their own…

A tutor should not only provoke academic gain but also mental development. A tutor must prove to be trustworthy and reliable, while constantly motivating their students to unlock their full potential. I will strive to do these things and much more! As a tutor, my strengths lie in the following areas: Communication: I will ensure that students…

I think that tutors with patience would be very important, as different students learn and understand things at different speeds. Patient tutors would also allow the students to feel more comfortable around their tutor allowing them to ask more questions, helping them master a particular subject. I think that being a recently graduated student…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide personalised support. Every student is unique, with individual learning styles, strengths, and challenges. A tutor should take time to understand the student's specific needs, tailor their approach to match the student's learning styles and provide targeted assistance…

Personalized instruction, tailored to individual learning styles and needs, is paramount, as is fostering a student's confidence through positive reinforcement and celebrating progress. I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

Being a good communicator and having a good relationship with the student so they can feel safe and have a place to feel themselves, because students cannot learn if they don't feel like they are comfortable with the people with them. I believe that a tutor needs to be able to explain a certain topic in different ways as one approach is not a fit for all. Alongside this, communicating and being emotionally intelligent allows to truly understand your student and how they deal with acedemic pressure etc. Ultimately, patience is the key when it comes to tutoring as students may…

A tutor's role gets more prominent when s/he tries to enable the learner to understand the language and use the language in the real world. Put it simply, the learner should be enabled to understand English, analyse it, speak it and more importantly use the English functions in the right place. For instance, in sessions with learners, I will…

To encourage is essential as one must never give up, no matter how hard the task at hand seems to be. At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

Inside Meadow HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Caleb worked on calculating the circumference and perimeter of circles and sectors, as well as solving worded questions involving manual decimal multiplication and division.

A Year 8 student focused on algebraic fractions, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing expressions with variables in the denominators.

For Year 7, work included understanding univariate data by finding mean, median, mode, range, and creating box-and-whisker plots using real data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full algebraic working, as noted: "Doing too much in his head, needs to practice writing working out down instead." This led to confusion and hidden calculation errors during polynomial division.

In Year 7, formatting issues surfaced—messy written solutions made it difficult to revise or spot errors when checking geometry work.

A senior student often neglected consistent backchecking, with a tutor observing, "Lots of errors that arose from superficial backchecking and being distracted towards the end of the lesson," causing small arithmetic slips to persist into final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Meadow Heights recently noticed a big shift with Oscar, a Year 9 student who used to freeze when stuck on maths problems—he now tries different approaches without prompting and talks through his thinking out loud.

In another session, Sedra (Year 10) independently recognised when to use the addition rule for probability after struggling previously, confidently translating worded problems into Venn diagrams.

Meanwhile, a primary student was able to complete most of her homework worksheet and showed clear understanding of BIDMAS after needing help before; she finished by explaining each step aloud as she worked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Meadow Heights Primary School.
