Providing the space for students to be comfortable in not understanding concepts, and making students enjoy the content they are learning. As a tutor, being patient with students who take time to process concepts is a strong point, and taking different approaches in teaching concepts is more important than brute…

Hear a student out! With my past experience as well, I have learnt that understanding a concept from the student's perspective first is very important when teaching as it helps the tutor learn where the student has gone wrong exactly and correct the student as much needed without making them feel under confident or unheard. This gives them the…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, be empathetic to their challenges, and make learning approachable. It’s not just about teaching the content — it’s about helping students believe in themselves and showing them that they can succeed. A tutor should also adapt their teaching style to…

To me, a tutor is the catalyst to a student's learning. Not only providing valuable insights into learning techniques and skillsets constructed from personal experience, but also giving students the necessary ingredients for building their own toolset with guidance and advice. I personally love approaching different tasks in different ways that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand. Students who are strugglings with certain subjects might not actually be bad at the subjects but rather they might not have had proper guidance from their teachers or they do not have a strong foundation, or they are just not studying in the right method. Each…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). I think my greatest strength is my approachability and flexibility. I do…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen to them. If you do not have two way communication a lot of details can be lost in translation or misunderstood . I am patient and I adapt to my students learning style in order to have effective communication. I plan material ahead of the lesson to ensure that the time I have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving enough time for the student who requires that time for understanding. Some students may require more time and a tutor should always be able to provide them with time and efforts. My strength as a tutor is the connection I get with the students. Also, my strength is a tutor is my…

My philosophy as a tutor is productivity over hard work. Tutors shouldn't just provide step answers for students to memorise, take their assessments and then forget it afterwards but, instead, should provide guidance and advice for students to understand the necessary steps and concepts leading to that solution. I understand that everyone learns…

I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. One of the key things a tutor should be able to do is identify a student's weak points and strengths. Secondly, I believe that you should know how to cater the experience of tutoring to each student based on their background. In addition to this, a tutor should be able to use a variety of techniques to teach a single concept because different…

Important things: 1. To be well prepared for sessions; 2. To strive to develop a connection with the student. Such connection would enable the student to feel comfortable sharing his challenges; 3. Feel enthusiastic about the subject. Such enthusiasm can be contagious which would increase the student’s interest and make him more earnest in…

As a tutor, I think it's important to be there for them. Learning loads of new concepts almost every second day can be overwhelming and with that, all students have their strengths and weaknesses. Thus as a tutor it would be a good measure to know their strengths and weaknesses and work with them through their weaknesses and add them to the list…

Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

I think it would be the unlimited support and confidence the tutor has for their student as well as their passion for their subject they are teaching. If the student feels like their tutor listens to them and has confidence in their potential, then in due time, the student will likely flourish and develop their abilities. A lot of the time…

Inside Moonee PondsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Chemistry with Thanh in Moonee Ponds has recently focused on interpreting IR spectra and mass spectrometry data, as well as consolidating titration steps and terminology.

For Year 11, Sarah revised galvanic vs electrolytic cells by working through example reactions and discussed the limitations of the electrochemical series.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Alex tackled stoichiometry problems related to combustion reactions and reviewed key experimental design terms like independent/dependent variables, reliability, and systematic errors using practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student repeatedly hesitated to commit answers in worded problems, despite often having the right approach; as one tutor noted, "she's on the right track but doesn't follow through," leading to missed marks for incomplete responses.

In Year 8 Mathematics, confusion arose from inconsistent written layout when breaking down algebraic expressions—working was scattered and hard to follow, which led to lost steps mid-solution.

For a Year 4 student newly learning algebra, fear of making mistakes sometimes resulted in avoidance of writing answers altogether, especially with two-step equations. This left gaps that slowed later revision and feedback.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moonee Ponds recently noticed some encouraging progress across several year levels.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who once hesitated with thermochemical equations is now writing them accurately and independently, even tackling combustion calculations that were previously daunting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 maths student has started converting tricky worded problems into simple algebraic expressions on her own, moving past earlier confusion about how to start these questions.

At the primary level, one diligent Year 6 learner breezed through addition and subtraction work this week with barely any mistakes—something she struggled with last term—and double-checked all her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Primary School.
