Instill a passion to learn the subject the tutor is helping out with and just generally help make the student feel competent when dealing with the subject. I can teach a wide range of subjects (all sciences) and I can pinpoint well what exactly the student is struggling with and try to explain the solution/ answer to their problems…

The most pivotal thing is support. A teacher is essentially a mentor, and mentors are supposed to provide encouragement to the students and make the students fall in love with the subjects. A teacher should assess the performance of the students on a regular basis to ensure the goals of the students are being met. This involves testing them…

The most important thing a tutor needs to do is help the students understand. This comes in many aspects as simply explaining to them new concepts is not enough. A good tutor should listen to their student's problems and try to solve them in the best way possible and if needed, get back to them later. Also, regular feedback should be given to the…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

The most important thing is to learn what the student needs. It is easy to go off track and teach all the information you know, but I believe the students' request come first. Even though the students might not know what they need, the tutor should work with them and identify which areas the student need improvements on. Hence, the tutor could…

The most important things a tutor can do is knowing the right way to support and motivate the student to grow academically. A tutor should also have a strong understanding of the subject so they can break lessons or problems into simpler terms, while still making the class fun and interactive. Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

The most important thing tutoring did for me was providing a deeper understanding of complicated topics that were hard to grasp. The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

First of all, transpositional thinking is really important. For students, they're the first time to learn some concepts while tutors have been dealing with the same concepts for at least several years. So a tutor must think from a student's perspective to find a better way to teach students. Secondly, a tutor should be able to check students'…

Inside Moonee PondsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Chemistry with Thanh in Moonee Ponds has recently focused on interpreting IR spectra and mass spectrometry data, as well as consolidating titration steps and terminology.

For Year 11, Sarah revised galvanic vs electrolytic cells by working through example reactions and discussed the limitations of the electrochemical series.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Alex tackled stoichiometry problems related to combustion reactions and reviewed key experimental design terms like independent/dependent variables, reliability, and systematic errors using practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student repeatedly hesitated to commit answers in worded problems, despite often having the right approach; as one tutor noted, "she's on the right track but doesn't follow through," leading to missed marks for incomplete responses.

In Year 8 Mathematics, confusion arose from inconsistent written layout when breaking down algebraic expressions—working was scattered and hard to follow, which led to lost steps mid-solution.

For a Year 4 student newly learning algebra, fear of making mistakes sometimes resulted in avoidance of writing answers altogether, especially with two-step equations. This left gaps that slowed later revision and feedback.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moonee Ponds recently noticed some encouraging progress across several year levels.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who once hesitated with thermochemical equations is now writing them accurately and independently, even tackling combustion calculations that were previously daunting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 maths student has started converting tricky worded problems into simple algebraic expressions on her own, moving past earlier confusion about how to start these questions.

At the primary level, one diligent Year 6 learner breezed through addition and subtraction work this week with barely any mistakes—something she struggled with last term—and double-checked all her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Primary School.
