The most important thing is for a tutor to be patient and approachable so students feel comfortable around them. If students are comfortable they will ask questions and improve faster. Being open and empathetic creates a much better relationship and experience for both the student and tutor. Note: I am currently living in New Zealand and will…

The most important thing is to learn what the student needs. It is easy to go off track and teach all the information you know, but I believe the students' request come first. Even though the students might not know what they need, the tutor should work with them and identify which areas the student need improvements on. Hence, the tutor could…

I think the important thing for a tutor is to be clear in their concepts so that they can explain and teach their student in a clear and understanding way. As a tutor you need to make sure you test the student so that you know where they stand and then start from there. Evaluating the progress is just as essential. I consider myself a well…

Tutors should try their best to inculcate a certain level of intrinsic motivation in their students, rather than having students work just because the teacher or tutor says so. This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

Aside from helping students understand new concepts and develop practical academic skills, I believe the most important thing I can do as a tutor is to inspire them to change their perspective on learning. I strive to help students see their studies not as a burden but as an opportunity to gain knowledge and broaden their horizons. By fostering a…

Give the student hope that they are able to do achieve something. I am that person where if u promise someone something that you know won't be achieved will damage that students confidence more than saying 'I can't promise anything, but I will try my absolute hardest to get you to your destination'. By giving students hope, and belief that they…

I want my students to be able not only to learn the given subjects/materials but also to learn how to learn. It might sound insignificant, but students will be lifelong learners, so they have to find out their learning styles, how to learn, how to manage their learning, etc. That's why it is important for me to also help them learn about…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

The most important thing tutoring did for me was providing a deeper understanding of complicated topics that were hard to grasp. It is also important to be someone that the student feels comfortable coming to with help. So by showing understanding and appreciation for their effort, a student doesn't feel concerned for getting an answer wrong of…

Learning is not a linear experience and it does take a lot of patience, time, and effort, and as a tutor, it is important to guide and support their student throughout the journey. It is also important to be a mentor and someone that the…

The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. Once a student tells themselves that 'they can do it', there are innumerable…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). It is most important to provide a comfortable space for students to make errors and learn, while also providing the motivation and space for studying to be completed. I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. Further, a tutor should be organized and behave professionally to set out the aura of a good…

Inside Moonee PondsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Chemistry with Thanh in Moonee Ponds has recently focused on interpreting IR spectra and mass spectrometry data, as well as consolidating titration steps and terminology.

For Year 11, Sarah revised galvanic vs electrolytic cells by working through example reactions and discussed the limitations of the electrochemical series.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Alex tackled stoichiometry problems related to combustion reactions and reviewed key experimental design terms like independent/dependent variables, reliability, and systematic errors using practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student repeatedly hesitated to commit answers in worded problems, despite often having the right approach; as one tutor noted, "she's on the right track but doesn't follow through," leading to missed marks for incomplete responses.

In Year 8 Mathematics, confusion arose from inconsistent written layout when breaking down algebraic expressions—working was scattered and hard to follow, which led to lost steps mid-solution.

For a Year 4 student newly learning algebra, fear of making mistakes sometimes resulted in avoidance of writing answers altogether, especially with two-step equations. This left gaps that slowed later revision and feedback.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moonee Ponds recently noticed some encouraging progress across several year levels.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who once hesitated with thermochemical equations is now writing them accurately and independently, even tackling combustion calculations that were previously daunting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 maths student has started converting tricky worded problems into simple algebraic expressions on her own, moving past earlier confusion about how to start these questions.

At the primary level, one diligent Year 6 learner breezed through addition and subtraction work this week with barely any mistakes—something she struggled with last term—and double-checked all her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Primary School.
