1. To identify where the child needs help - be it in the process of solving a question, or in fact in the way they think of what the question is asking. 2. To be able to communicate point 1 above, such that the child is able to understand. 3. Holistically take into account that each child is different, sometimes it is not a matter of merely…

Building a student's confidence, helping them understand the material in a way that makes sense to them, and fostering a supportive environment where they feel free to ask questions are, in my opinion, the three most crucial things a tutor can do for a student. A good tutor should make learning seem more doable and less scary, promote…

Communication and understanding of each other. During the tutoring, problems could occur either of studying or of the relaionship between the student and the tutor, but if we keep effective communication and understanding of each other, almost all problems could be solved and high efficiency of learning could be insured. Although I have no professional experience as a tutor, I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to be able to give them the right amount of time and space for them to learn independently- but always be ready to be bombarded with questions. A tutor should be capable to communicate well with their students to…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to provide constructive but fair feedback to their students, while also providing practical advice and support to them, so they can improve in areas where they were originally struggling. I believe that I am a patient and understanding person, who is quite personable and can talk to people easily. I have…

Often if students are seeking tutoring, they are struggling or in a place of doubt about their abilities. Providing a comfortable, safe environment where students can feel reassured about their own abilities is so important. I know before I developed a passion for mathematics especially, I struggled with and detested the subject. As soon as I…

First and foremost, I believe a tutor should inspire genuine passion and interest from a student with regards to the subject at hand- I strongly feel that students perform their best when they take interest and see the value in the concepts being taught. Furthermore, it's important that a tutor is able to adapt to the learning and working style of…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to bring little, positive changes into their lives. Grades are important and students go to tutors to improve their grades, but tutors are capable of much more than that. Progress can be measured in so many ways - a student gradually putting in more effort to complete their…

Help the student to understand concepts and how to think about solutions to problems and to think about how they apply concepts they learn, so that when they're alone they can think clearly and accurately for themselves. Listening to the student is very important. You need to know when they are getting frustrated and exactly what is confusing them. Sometimes they figure out a different method for solving a problem and if you don't fully understand what they are saying you may not realise they are on the correct track. I think I am good at breaking complicated…

I think the most important thing is to build their confidence. Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
