It's very important for tutors to teach using methods which suit each unique student's preferred learning style. Tutors should be approachable to encourage students to ask questions as many times as they need to fully understand a topic. Most importantly, tutors should support their student's learning and promote a positive attitude towards…

The most important things a tutor can do is build confidence. Confidence in their approach, confidence in their ability and confidence in themselves to solve problems. Additionally, a good tutor can adapt to each students needs and ability, giving them the tools they need to become independent and self reliant. Above all I have found that parents…

I think an ideal tutor should teach to the student's strengths and minimise their weaknesses by helping them in their weak areas. It's also equally important to be compassionate and build rapport through empathy and effective communication. - I graduated from high school a few years ago, and I was my school topper consistently from year 3 to 12.…

I think the most important thing tutor can provide for their students is new perspectives both on learning and their subjects. A tutor should help the student understand topics they struggle with and add to the teaching from teachers and help them finding new ways to learn. While simultaneously help the student find enjoyment for the subject which…

I always wish that there should not be any weak students, so I used to teach by focusing to their weaknesses. Even though it was basic for students to know, I just teach them again to make them easy. I always ask them about the basic questions which they learned in their lower classes, this makes me realise where I have to start with in order to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not give their tutees the answer, but give their tutees ways to get to the answer. Teaching students how to understand problems at a fundamental level, break them down into parts they can individually understand and then piece together, ideally all on their own. This kind of critical thinking…

A tutor needs to genuinely want the students to learn out of every session and care for the students. The tutor needs to be 100% focused on every second of the session. Students are often scared of certain subjects and avoid facing their problems. For a tutor to be successful at his/her job, they need to be able to help the child overcome those fears and enjoy the subject they were once afraid of. Tutoring can be very challenging sometimes. In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. The best thing I believe is to help student realize their ability in learning mathematics. I consider the shift from teacher-centered teaching to learner-centered learning is essential. Great service. Our tutor Iqra is excellent. Very responsible and always makes sure that Hazel feels comfortable with tasks. She often stays extra time to give Hazel breaks. Hazel has become more confident with maths and is enjoying it. I actually asked my daughter if she wanted to continue with tuition and she said, "yes mum it makes a difference ". That's all I needed to hear. Thank you for a great service.

Inside North RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Cadence focused on calculating areas and perimeters as well as tackling division problems using her school homework.

Year 6 student Caesar worked through probability questions and practiced converting between different units of time.

For a high schooler, Year 8 Mia reviewed indices laws and completed revision exercises involving simplifying expressions with both positive and negative exponents.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student was reminded to "show working instead of thinking about the question," but often avoided writing steps in algebra, making it harder to catch errors and slowing progress on new concepts.

In Year 7, a student frequently forgot homework when revising for a test—this meant less targeted feedback during lessons.

Another senior student struggled with aligning decimals correctly in calculations, which led to answers being off by factors of ten or more.

Meanwhile, in primary years, one learner's messy handwriting made subtraction mistakes harder to spot; as a tutor noted, "his layout made it difficult to check his own work."

Recent Achievements

One North Rocks tutor noted that Jasper, a high school student, managed to solve extension-level algebraic equations and indices on his own after previously needing more support with similar problems.

In another recent session, Jacob, also in high school, successfully remembered and applied the laws of indices adaptively to new questions—he'd often hesitated before when presented with unfamiliar formats.

Meanwhile, Marcelino in Year 5 has begun thinking independently on number line questions instead of waiting for hints; last week he divided a number line into quarters by himself and explained his reasoning without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlingford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like North Rocks Public School.
