I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is getting them motivated to work hard. It is important that the students themselves have a desire to improve. Another majorly important thing is a focus on understanding and confidence in the concepts rather than finding patterns in repetitive practice. Additionally, tutors should…

Helping students become the best they can possibly be, allowing them to build confidence, and become independent learners. All in all, tutors should be the extra boost a student needs to achieve exactly what they want to. Through their services, a tutor should be able to provide the student with the basic skills needed to allow them to go on their…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is ensure that a student learns and doesn't hate a subject. I understand that grades are equally important my ensuring that the knowledge has reached the student is even more so important. Therefore, as a tutor I will ensure that the lessons are fun and exciting leaving the students more eager to…

I think one of the most important things is for the tutor to be understanding and listen to the student's problems to be able to grasp what they are struggling with and aid them effectively. It is also useful for the tutor to build a good relationship with the student to help increase their strengths in learning and incorporate their interests I…

A tutor has the opportunity to encourage confidence in students. Not solely confidence that they can achieve highly, but confidence that they can give anything a go and learn and improve as they do. A tutor can present things in an engaging way to encourage the student to be open-minded to things they may have discounted because they seem…

Provide guidance and encouragement. Also allowing the student to have a go on their own will assist them in thinking for themselves whilst stepping in when needed. Making sure concepts are well understood by the student is of high importance and the tutor should facilitate this understanding. The student should start to feel more confident in…

I think that a tutor should be approachable - the student shouldn't be afraid to say that they don't understand something. After all, the tutor is there to help the student through any new concepts and ensure that they are taught in an easy to understand way. The tutor should be able to adapt to the student's most effective learning techiques i.e.…

The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

Encouragement. Learning something new can be hard. Things that do not come easily have the potential to discourage us, but the only way for anyone to fail is if they give up. As a tutor it is my number one priority to emphasize the successes of each student, and to find ways to inspire them to keep trying to learn. I will consider each session of…

The most important lesson a tutor can impart is helping students learn how to accept failure and use it as a tool for growth. Many students disengage from the learning environment when they experience confusion or fear making mistakes, often due to inadequate academic support or negative reinforcement when they are incorrect. However, making…

Inside Oaklands ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ava focused on ordering decimal numbers to three places and practiced NAPLAN numeracy questions involving whole number place value up to one million.

Year 6 student Oliver revised the terminology and equivalence of improper fractions and mixed numbers, as well as compared decimal numbers to three decimal places.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Sophie worked through converting metric units of measurement and developed strategies for long multiplication with multi-digit numbers.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 maths, a student showed ongoing confusion with place value boards, especially labelling columns from hundredths to hundred thousands—this led to misplacement of numbers during decimal tasks.

For a Year 7 learner, messy working in algebra meant "the distributive law steps were hard to track," causing repeated errors when substituting into expressions.

A senior student in Year 10 often revised only familiar fraction types and avoided tackling new equivalence problems; this narrowed progress before assessments.

One student's reluctance to attempt challenging reading comprehension in English limited exposure to higher-order questions, making it difficult to build confidence with inference skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oaklands Park noticed a real shift with Brooke, a high school student, who used to rely on calculators for tricky maths but now chooses to solve algebraic equations and convert fractions herself—she's even started checking her work without prompting.

Another secondary student, Maelie, previously hesitant with long division, is now working through multi-step problems independently and using the correct vocabulary when explaining each stage.

Meanwhile, Jye (primary) surprised his tutor by reading aloud new narrative texts with strong self-correction skills and pausing for punctuation—something he avoided last term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cultural Centre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christ the King School.
