Provide the student with confidence. Not only with their work but confidence in the fact that their tutor is able to accurately educate them and use that information at school or university My biggest strength as a tutor is certainly my ability to adapt my lessons accordingly. This means if I notice a student struggling to understand my…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to ensure that the student truly understands the concepts they are learning. While it's important to make tutoring sessions engaging and interactive, the ultimate goal is for the student to leave each session with a clearer understanding that supports their academic progress. To achieve this, it's…

A tutor plays a very important role in a student's life. A good teacher can put a life long impact on the growth and personality of a student. A tutor can be an inspiration to the student and always be there for him or her not only during the course but even after the course as a mentor for life. My strengths are my ability to explain concepts in…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: (1) being patient and listen to what they actually need help with and not just blatantly providing answers, (2) making sure that they understand what is explained and can be applied to other questions or other scenarios, and (3) help the students enjoy the subject they have trouble with,…

By far the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure they have a strong base knowledge of the subject by explaining and approaching ideas in ways that they understand and can use practically. My knowledge of the subject matter (maths and physics) is excellent and I\'ve seen and used a number of different teaching methods in my…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. A tutor can be skilled, and well educated, but if a student does not enjoy the process of being taught in a manner that which leaves them academically unsatisfied, or frustrated, then their potential is…

What is most important is to be able to cultivate self-confidence within the student when it comes to facing questions and tasks on their own; to let them believe they can face any challenge without fear or trepidation. Being able to get across difficult and abstract concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand for the…

Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. Tutors should identify what sort of unique methods they should approach their students to give them the best tutoring experience! One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is listen. I have seen in my experience that sometimes students have unsolved doubts because their class teacher or tutor does not properly listen to them and fail to comprehend these queries. Anybody can be knowledgable on any topic or chapter but what really helps a student is if…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students, can…

Tutors need to get to know the students, what they are good at and their weaknesses so tutors can help them out the best. Tutors need to have the knowledge to teach students and to make sure students can learn from them efficiently. They should form a deep relationship with students so students are able to trust them with learning. Tutors should…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure the student clearly understands the topic, not just memorises it. It's about helping them build real confidence so that when they answer questions, whether in class or in exams, they're not second-guessing themselves. That means breaking things down in a way that actually makes sense…

Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand the type of support needed. Some students require more explanation whereas other students prefer to work with problems to understand what and how they should apply themselves and what they have learnt. This also may change for different topics with the same student; it's about trying…

The first session with Carol was great!
Joanna

Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
