The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding of the student. I believe that in order to teach efficiently, those two core values must be practiced first for the student to truly engage and advance in the learning material. Contrastingly, in a practical sense, the most important thing we can do is to ensure the student understands…

The most important thing is listening to a student and truly understanding their strengths and weaknesses. This will ensure that the lesson is tailored for their own needs and maximum benefits are gained. Moreover, if a student does not understand a certain concept, explaining it to them in a different manner is really important. My strength is…

This helps develop skills like adaptability, critical thinking, and problem-solving, preparing them to navigate challenges both in and outside the classroom. Give time to the student. Clear doubts if any in their mind. I believe in hierarchical learning of a concept. First let the students solve the easy to medium difficulty questions confidently and then go on to the tougher ones. By breaking the tougher questions into small easier parts, student can understand it better First and…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to inspire students through education. The world of education is so vast and enriching, both primary and secondary school is a long journey and for my students to enjoy education rather than drag their feet through the process is one of my biggest hopes and goals. There are endless possibilities…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand the type of support needed. Some students require more explanation whereas other students prefer to work with problems to understand what and how they should apply themselves and what they have learnt. This also may change for different topics with the same student; it's about trying…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

I believe the most important aspects of a tutor are to make learning enjoyable, to build confidence and to encourage a problem solving attitude. Being confident in yourself also improves the will to learn and problem solving builds resilience when answers…

It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. I believe that the most important responsibility of a tutor is to inspire curiosity and passion for study among students. This can be done by making lessons much more interactive and fascinating, which will encourage them to study for themselves, not for the sake of someone else. I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

The most important thing is to make the student understand there is no reason to be disappointed. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to teach a student how to be independent and think critically. Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
