Tutors should be able to make a student not feel bad for having trouble during lessons. They should allow them to feel open to asking questions and asking for help when they do not understand an aspect of something being taught. I think I can connect and befriend students well as a tutor. I try my best to make students as comfortable as they can…

Hear a student out! With my past experience as well, I have learnt that understanding a concept from the student's perspective first is very important when teaching as it helps the tutor learn where the student has gone wrong exactly and correct the student as much needed without making them feel under confident or unheard. This gives them the…

Having worked with students of ages from kindergarten to high school, I believe that the foundations of education before growth stagnation is the most important for setting up individuals for life. I believe that institutions should not just focus on education as an individual tool, but should also in parallel be capable of teaching students about…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen to them. If you do not have two way communication a lot of details can be lost in translation or misunderstood . I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy learning…

To recognise that no two students are the same and that a process like learning needs to be personalised so that the best results are achieved. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only be able to teach them the material, but to also be able to mentor them. When a student seeks for help of a tutor, it is important to figure it out where students get struggle or feel not confident. In addition, a tutor need to track up with students progress, exam schedule and use appropriate teaching approaches to improve students' academic achievement and self-esteem. One of the key things a tutor should be able to do is identify a student's weak points and strengths. Secondly, I believe that you should know how to cater the experience of tutoring to each student based on their background. In addition to this, a tutor should be able to use a variety of techniques to teach a single concept because different…

Inside Pascoe ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adam completed reading comprehension tasks with multiple choice questions and wrote a creative paragraph about what he would do if he saw a dinosaur in the backyard.

Year 10 student Lucy focused on the roles and responsibilities of judges, accused persons, prosecution, and legal practitioners in the court system, as well as exploring the purposes of criminal sanctions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Harsh worked through key psychology topics including subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems for responding to sensory stimuli and examined how neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA influence neural communication.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to start sentences without prompting and often needed help generating ideas for writing, which slowed progress on tasks.

In a Year 7 English lesson, he rushed through multiple-choice questions and relied on teacher approval before circling answers, leading to uncertainty and second-guessing.

Across several year levels, spelling errors recurred—especially when work was completed in haste or without checking.

A Year 10 student took too long on homework, then hurried later tasks "for the sake of completion," resulting in missed corrections and lower-quality responses. This left him feeling unsure about his final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale tutor noticed a Year 10 student recently started tackling practice questions independently without checking her notes, a big step up from earlier sessions when she relied on them for every answer.

In Year 8 English, a student who used to avoid reading aloud now volunteers to read whole pages and even goes back to fix any sentences that sound off—something he was once hesitant about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun spelling unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and trying on his own before asking for help, finishing last week's spelling test with almost no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pascoe Vale Primary School.
