Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a maths tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

Tutors can be an influential figure for various students just not because of teaching but also developing belief, confidence and self respect and learning attributes within them. I usually teach individuals the smarter way in which they are comfortable to understand and can grasp quickly. I can understand from one or two sessions with an…

I consider one of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on…

Trying to understand the level of math understanding of the student and to work on the math concepts right from the level the students are not clear. For tutoring profession one very important skill is to deliver the knowledge, tutors may be intelligent and superskilled but they become great teachers only when then can get down to the level of…

Patience. Once we know something, it's easy to forget how we actually learnt that content. Therefore, it's important to always be persistent with someone's learning, and to never just keep using the same method then give up. Another aspect is structure. If you give students an expectation and guidance in what they need to do, it's more…

Without repeating myself, I would re-iterate that it's the capacity to listen before teaching. While I have enjoyed learning from say, a martial arts instructor who barks orders, mathematics and education is much different, an engagement of the student's mind. Refusing to understand can build resentment toward an entire subject; I've met plenty of…

Being reliable and ensuring the student is effectively learning. Also, being able to relate to the student would be crucial, and understanding their particular circumstances to bring out the very best, whether that be from a D to a C, or an A to an A+. A tutor should also be able to communicate well to their student to ensure they can explain…

I think the primary responsibility of a maths tutor is to recognise and accommodate the different goals of students. I strongly believe that tutor should never give up on any students and respect student's own learning style. Each students has their own learning styles that they are comfortable with, or if they haven't yet developed their own style, it's tutor's duty to let them find their own to maximize each student's potential. With my international…

Tutors should be able to make a student not feel bad for having trouble during lessons. They should allow them to feel open to asking questions and asking for help when they do not understand an aspect of something being taught. I think I can connect and befriend students well as a tutor. I try my best to make students as comfortable as they can…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a maths tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

very happy with the tutor I have for my daughters. Ezy-math obviously employ top notch tutors. I cannot fault the girl we have, she has a natural ability for teaching and does it in a way that my daughters readily understand. Well worth the money as my daughters marks in both Mathematics and Chemistry have vastly improved.

Inside Princes HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mila focused on adding and subtracting decimals as well as solving fraction problems using number lines.

For Year 9, Liam worked through quadratic equations—factoring, graphing parabolas, and translating their positions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby practised statistics by creating box plots and calculating mean and standard deviation from real data sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student showed reluctance to write out answers for trend analysis in graph questions—"sometimes reluctant in describing the trends (which I'm sure he knows but too tired to write them down)"—leading to incomplete responses.

A Year 11 student struggled with submitting assessments on time, missing deadlines and sometimes not attempting all required tasks.

In a Year 4 session, a child forgot their textbook, which limited progress during tutoring.

Another senior student relied heavily on hints for advanced problems rather than trying multiple strategies first, often pausing whenever a new method was introduced.

Recent Achievements

One Princes Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through questions is now carefully writing down every step when solving quadratics, leading to fewer errors and quicker solutions.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw real improvement as she started tackling worded fraction problems independently—something she hesitated with before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once waited for prompts has begun asking thoughtful questions about upcoming topics, showing new initiative in her learning. Last week, she asked to try material ahead of her class for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brunswick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Secondary College.
