A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

The most important thing is support and feedback. When a student has clear feedback they know what and how to improve. When they have not been given feedback, they will not know how to improve in a subject. Giving that feedback and support in actioning it is the most important thing a tutor can do. My main strengths are patience and an ability to…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. Overall, good communication and weekly tasks and homeworks…

A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. A good tutor should give the confidence and tools for a student to succeed independently. I think I have a strong knowledge of the VCE…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving enough time for the student who requires that time for understanding. Also, my strength is a tutor is my…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. It is the primary responsibility of a tutor to help students strengthen their concepts and build strong fundamentals in subjects. The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. Lessons should give plenty of opportunities for students to test their knowledge as well as focusing on any grey areas by explaining any difficult concepts again. The second thing and perhaps…

The most important thing a tutor needs to do is help the students understand. This comes in many aspects as simply explaining to them new concepts is not enough. A good tutor should listen to their student's problems and try to solve them in the best way possible and if needed, get back to them later. Also, regular feedback should be given to the…

For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

The most important things a tutor can do is knowing the right way to support and motivate the student to grow academically. very happy with the tutor I have for my daughters. Ezy-math obviously employ top notch tutors. I cannot fault the girl we have, she has a natural ability for teaching and does it in a way that my daughters readily understand. Well worth the money as my daughters marks in both Mathematics and Chemistry have vastly improved.

Inside Princes HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mila focused on adding and subtracting decimals as well as solving fraction problems using number lines.

For Year 9, Liam worked through quadratic equations—factoring, graphing parabolas, and translating their positions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby practised statistics by creating box plots and calculating mean and standard deviation from real data sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student showed reluctance to write out answers for trend analysis in graph questions—"sometimes reluctant in describing the trends (which I'm sure he knows but too tired to write them down)"—leading to incomplete responses.

A Year 11 student struggled with submitting assessments on time, missing deadlines and sometimes not attempting all required tasks.

In a Year 4 session, a child forgot their textbook, which limited progress during tutoring.

Another senior student relied heavily on hints for advanced problems rather than trying multiple strategies first, often pausing whenever a new method was introduced.

Recent Achievements

One Princes Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through questions is now carefully writing down every step when solving quadratics, leading to fewer errors and quicker solutions.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw real improvement as she started tackling worded fraction problems independently—something she hesitated with before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once waited for prompts has begun asking thoughtful questions about upcoming topics, showing new initiative in her learning. Last week, she asked to try material ahead of her class for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brunswick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Secondary College.
