The most important things a tutor can do for students is to teach as well as keep them motivated on their progress. A tutor shapes a child or an adult to get the best out of themselves and helps them gain courage and be brave with their studies. I have a great way of teaching in where I combine practical and application based teaching. I am…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

The most important thing for a tutor is to be an individual that students can openly and freely talk to other than being able to give knowledge. Allowing students to feel understood helps them overcome thoughts of self doubt which can help further their advancement academically and to help them in their well-being. My strength is organising and…

I have been inspired by educators who encourage their students' learning and find different ways to teach the same concepts. For students who struggle, helping them understand basic/intermediate concepts is a big step. Getting quality responses and correct answers by themselves builds confidence in student learning, and creates positive feedback…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

I think stoking an interest in self education/exploration of a subject is more important than helping them simply pass a test (though that is important as well). When a student wants to research a topic on their own time, they not only have found a way to improve, but also might have found a future passion or career choice they never knew they…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. Patience is important for many reasons in tutoring. In my…

To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. The most important thing in teaching is to make the student believe that they will surpass any goals they set their minds into. A tutor must recognise the level of understanding of a student and then explain concepts to that level. This will ensure progress of the student. 1) I have patience to keep explaining till the student understands it. 2) I teach each student differently based on their level of understanding. 3) I prepare myself well before the session, try to…

In mi opinion, a tutor should take care of the students in terms of ensuring that they understand each one of the concepts and topics explained. He/she should not hesitate in repeating an explanation as many times as necessary if the student doesn't understand any topic. The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In addition to this, having a practical approach other than the traditional teaching style is…

Lisa, Seddon

Inside SeddonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mia focused on converting denominators to add and subtract fractions, as well as simplifying fractions for clarity.

In Year 9, Ethan practiced solving algebraic equations for x and reviewed strategies for factorising quadratic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby worked through the distributive law of surds in algebra and reinforced her understanding by graphing linear lines using different methods.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a barrier for one Year 8 student—"not attempted," the note read, which limited progress with dividing and multiplying by factors of ten.

In Year 9 algebra sessions, working out was sometimes kept in students' heads rather than on paper, so key sign errors or steps were missed ("pen to paper" needed).

A senior student brought neither book nor notes to revision, making it harder to practice manipulating equations and use feedback.

One Year 11 learner hesitated to check work after each step; small mistakes went unnoticed until the end, meaning extra time spent fixing avoidable errors.

Recent Achievements

A Seddon tutor noticed that one Year 11 student, after initially struggling with understanding the inflation formula and the difference between purchasing power and current value, began breaking down complex questions independently and set up a personal study log to track his progress—a big shift from needing step-by-step direction.

Another high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help now initiates discussions about challenging algebraic problems and has started keeping organised notes in a dedicated rules book.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often guessed spelling is now confidently rewriting definitions and reading them aloud after targeted literacy practice during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Mechanics' Institute Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Pilgrim Campus.
