I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, foster independent learning, and create a positive learning atmosphere. A tutor shouldn’t just provide answers, but instead guide students towards developing problem-solving skills and effective study habits. It’s also important to be encouraging and…

A good tutor should be able to support student with his/her grade and also lead the study in the fun way. Acting more like a friend than a teacher and make students love learning by heart is the most important thing a tutor can do. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience and avoid putting pressure on them, because when students have a positive mindset, they can learn new things quicker. In addition, sometimes there will be difficult work that requires them to put in more effort to get an answer, so as a tutor, I need to be patient enough for…

I think academic and mental supports are very important. Make the students feel that I am easy to reach, and feel safe to express themselves. Find out different students' difficulties and provide the most accurate support. I think it is my empathy. Because I am still a student, I understand the students, and could feel the same with them. Plus, I…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning clear, enjoyable, and confidence-building. Students should feel comfortable asking questions without hesitation, and I believe lessons work best when they’re engaging and even a bit fun. When a student starts enjoying the subject, their motivation and progress grow naturally.…

As far as i am concerned, the role of a tutor cannot be confined to just teach subjects. A tutor should be able to inspire and make the student feel confir that he’s able to understand the concepts from the grass root level. In addition to that, tutors should make students updated in the latest trends in the subject I would say my main strengths…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
