I think a good tutor is supposed to firmly believe that every child can achieve success in each subject regardless of any individual difficulties even with special needs. Based on that mindset, a good tutor also need to provide motivation, learning strategies, monitoring and other generic skills such as problem-solving skills and so on to the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. This demonstrates the foundation of their basics and will take them a long way regardless of their chosen field. I generally try to explain concepts with various analogies instead of just showing the proper…

A tutor should always understand the level of understanding of a particular subject by a student, so that he/she can start teaching from the basics if necessary. I am people-friendly. I know English, Tamil, Chinese, and German, so I can speak in a way students can understand the topics clearly. Also, I am strong in my fundamentals, so I can teach…

The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. The tutor should also be kind and attentive towards the children. I am very comfortable around children, and I tend to make them comfortable too. I also like to play with certain tips and tricks so that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel confident with any subject or topic they are struggling with. To provide continuous guidance and support to them. To ensure that no student is left behind in any way. To motivate them to give their 100% in every subject. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is to simplify…

Once again I think it is very important for the tutor to explain why a step is being used rather than just teaching them to blindly memorize the process. I am very keen on understanding the steps of solving a problem, so I believe that being able to teach the why helps significantly improve understanding the…

Mental support Always be active to answer questions (even in off work periods of the day) Make a good plan of what the session will be all about before it starts. Openmind at work ... Try different methods and examples to communicate the concepts. Let the student work the problems on their own and then try to guide them to the answers without…

Communication, patience, understanding. Clearly explaining the topic with either simple or appropriate terms depending on the student's level. I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Every tutor should try to personalise the tutor session based on the needs, learning pattern and pace, interests and goals of the children so that they can make the most out of it. I…

I think that would be putting themselves as a student and be the teacher they always wanted/needed when they were their age. There is nothing more powerful than a teacher who is still a student at heart, in my opinion. Empathy as a student, as well as finding simple ways to explain complex…

As a tutor's job is to be supplementary to a students learning, the most vital role a tutor can fulfill is to be sympathetic and understanding to a student's situation, and to be adaptive in the way they assist the student in order to maximise their potential. I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. A tutor should also keep encouraging the students to keep going even when it's tough. I think one of my strengths is being patient. I don't mind explaining…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is tutoring them not only to make them get the answer, but helping them to understand about the material and helping them to have a good study habit. I think an important thing for a tutor is to not tell the student the answer but help them learn how to achieve the answer themselves. Incorporating coaching into tutoring allows the student to learn how to do it independently when the tutor is not around. I am very patient with children and I like to come up with different activities so that the…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Creativity and enthusiasm for teaching. Ability to explain…

Local Reviews

The whole process of finding a tutor has been so simple, all I had to do was make the initial enquiry. We had our tutor within 24hours! Freddy is so lovely and while it is early days we can see the confidence growing in our son. We highly recommend this service...in fact I already have :)

Inside StanmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Avi worked on trigonometry, focusing on sine, cosine, and tangent rules with targeted practice questions, as well as reviewing surds for clarity.

Year 10 Luke reviewed past exam papers to address topics he found challenging and discussed areas of confusion across the syllabus in detail.

In Year 11, Avi practiced monic and non-monic quadratic factorisation and revisited line equations by working through sample test problems.

Recent Challenges

For a Year 8 student, missing school and tutorial homework led to gaps in understanding algebra and number patterns—"she wasn't understanding the content from school and there was missing school homework I noticed."

In Chemistry (Year 11), failing to memorise polyatomic ions meant techniques shown previously were not recognised in later exam questions, making revision less effective.

A Year 9 student's over-complicated diagram annotations in Science resulted in missed marks for terminology and logical structure.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner struggled with two-digit multiplication because times tables weren't automatic; this slowed progress on new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Stanmore tutor noticed one high school student who had previously hesitated to ask questions now actively seeking clarification during economics essay planning, leading him to correctly use diagrams in new scenarios without prompting.

Another student, after initially struggling with structuring written responses, has begun writing PEEL paragraphs independently and completed several on his own with improved clarity.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who once guessed at answers now takes time to double-check her calculations for area and volume before responding—she even asked for more challenging shapes last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Stanmore Public School.
