One of the most important things a maths tutor can do in my opinion is understand how a student thinks and foster a sense of encouragement regarding that thinking pattern. Personally in my experience I have found that this is very helpful and just overall a nice quality to have in a teacher/tutor. I believe my strengths as a tutor come from the…

I believe the most important role a maths tutor plays is to establish a friendly relationship with the student. This makes learning more engaging and achievable. My previous tutoring experience has shown me that students learn best when they are engaged more personally. For example, relating concepts to the hobbies of a student allows them to…

Support young people in their individual approach to encourage self-understanding, self-awareness and self-belief. The most significant aspect of benefit which a maths tutor can imposed on a student is patience and the drive to ensure the student has received a full understanding of the topic. These two aspects require extensive skills of balance as imbalance amongst either aspect can create an uncomfortable experience of learning for students. As a tutor,…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for their student is to understand not only where they need assistance in their school work, but how they best learn. No matter how good or well-educated a tutor is, if they can't adapt to different learning styles, the student will not benefit. Through helping my classmates throughout high school,…

Explain concepts to students that they do not understand. Fill in the gaps that they have not been able to grasp at school in the classroom. A tutor should help students feel supported, not judged — and create an environment where they can build both skill and confidence. It's important to help students develop strong foundations and problem-solving strategies, but equally important to listen, encourage curiosity, and show them that improvement is always possible. A great tutor…

Local Reviews

Gabriel was fantastic, and Ziggy really got a lot from the first session.
Belinda, Winmalee

Inside WinmaleeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jasmine worked on calculating perimeter and area of rectangles, then explored the difference between surface area and volume using diagrams.

In Year 9, Alexia revised algebraic expressions—including multiplication and division—before tackling problem-solving questions involving congruent triangles and index laws.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Thomas focused on financial maths by calculating tax, Medicare levy, and determining taxable income with real-world worksheet examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on financial maths repeatedly left homework incomplete, especially in calculating tax and Medicare levy. "She needs to gain more confidence with these topics," a tutor noted, after missed practice questions slowed progress for upcoming assessments.

In Year 8 algebra, skipping written steps—"Careful with which method to use," as observed—led to hidden sign errors that reappeared during revision.

Meanwhile, a primary student avoided writing unfamiliar words when reading aloud, hesitating instead of sounding them out. This avoidance meant new vocabulary was rarely attempted during sessions, and spelling improvements stalled.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Winmalee noticed Tariq, a high school student, shift from hesitating over Pythagoras' Theorem to accurately calculating unknown sides on his own after some targeted guidance—something he'd previously found confusing.

Another high school win: Isabelle, while preparing for her ROSA exam, patiently worked through tricky area and perimeter questions on shapes like trapeziums and cylinders; she steadily increased correct answers each session as her understanding grew.

In primary years, Charbel moved from struggling with basic letter formation to independently tracing and copying letters more neatly, focusing better during counting activities that included colouring tasks.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have been working with Emily since last year and so we are very happy with her.

Nicholas, our tutor, has been absolutely amazing and has a wonderful influence on on Mike. And you service is exceptional!

I think Velvet and Kirsten are starting to work well together. The book is really helpful to learn about the theories and what works in a practical sense.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blue Mountains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Winmalee High School.
