One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be empathetic to the experience of a student, especially as a young person. Having been a recent graduate, I understand the pressures, stress and desires surrounding ones education and the want to improve and evolve as a learner. Therefore, being empathetic allows a tutor to…

Motivation and understanding the learning need of a student. Most of these students come because they are either challenged or want to be ahead of the game in class. Motivation is one of the core soft skills a tutor should have. Without it and an understanding of how a student effectively learns, all of the tutor's knowledge is in vain. I’m an…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. Paying attention on them. A student sometimes have fear and won't ask their doubts. As tutors we must pay attention to them and see what they need. If not the students won't achieve their goals. Maintaining a positive attitude not only strengthens the teacher-student relationship but also boosts students' confidence in their learning. I believe every student has the potential to become their best self. In addition to providing emotional support, I believe tutors should actively support students' dreams by helping them set clear and achievable goals. For example, the SMART technique allows students to track their progress, which promotes independence and self-directed learning.…

Inside AberfeldieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah worked on factorising and expanding algebraic expressions, including an introduction to the "Magic X method" for quadratics.

For Year 8, Jack focused on trigonometric ratios—using diagrams to connect sine, cosine, and tangent with right-angled triangles—and revised graphing lines by finding gradients and axis intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily practised scientific notation alongside significant figures and applied exponent laws in problem-solving contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left algebraic fractions homework incomplete, meaning skills didn't progress between sessions.

In Year 10, one learner avoided writing out steps when rearranging equations, as the tutor noted: "She only used her calculator and couldn't replicate the method afterwards."

A Year 7 struggled with messy working—numbers and steps ran together on the page, which made checking for mistakes much harder.

Meanwhile, a senior student lost motivation after struggling with vocabulary in essay writing; frustration grew each time sentences were marked incorrect, leading to slower improvement in both confidence and output.

Recent Achievements

One Aberfeldie tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after struggling with mistakes on matrix assignments, he recently completed his work without errors and started presenting his solutions clearly for exams.

In a Year 8 English session, Sam—who used to be hesitant sharing ideas—spoke up more than usual and received positive feedback from his teacher on his essay.

Meanwhile, Julia in Year 5 has begun taking her own notes during lessons rather than waiting for prompts, showing new independence she didn't have at the start of term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aberfeldie Primary School.
