The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide a tailor-fit learning environment for them. A tutor must be considerate of every student in any way, shape, or form. This way, the student would feel more comfortable with the tutor and soon enough, they will see these subjects are enjoyable in their own way. I believe that I have…

A tutor should be able to teach their students in an interesting manner, and be more personal. For me I had a tutor in mathematics in grade 6 and he was almost like a friend (and motivated me to enjoy maths myself), I don't think tutors need to be exactly like teachers as students already have to deal with them at school. Most importantly a tutor…

To be a tutor outside the school, the priority of my job is help students master the knowledge, it is also important to help them build up the confidence, to prevent students from hating or being afraid of this subject. I am patient with each student. It is important for teachers to be patient, for example, they will need to answer a question that…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success. The more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I listen to students well so that I can better understand their misconceptions and errors. I would encourage them in the learning process…

In my opinion, the most important things that a tutor can do are: - encourage students to explain concepts in their own words - be patient and enthusiastic with them - give them plenty of relevant questions to help reinforce concepts - listen to them explain how they learn best and adapt one's teaching style accordingly - be flexible in case…

Be supportive and patient understanding everyone learns at a different pace and ways. Also, acknowledging that some content is more difficult than others to some people and that is fine. Just to ensure the student that it is ok to struggle with certain things, we all do at the end of the day. I adapt easily. I always study my student so I can…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. I reckon the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student is spending time with them, listening, sympathising, effectively communicating and building connections with them. School curriculum is not designed for any particular students, so many of them can't study the way they find the most suitable and easiest for them, resulting in the need…

I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. We as tutors have to realise that not all students will understand ever single concept that they are taught the first time they are taught it. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. As a tutor, above all, you should be helping your students achieve their goal. Whether they're aiming for a pass or excellent marks to enter their preferred university, a tutor should be helping them succeed academically. Realistically, a tutor will most likely not change a student's opinion of a particular subject, but that is fine. I think my…

Inside BurnleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sam worked through factorisation in algebra and solved chemistry mole calculation problems, using step-by-step examples to clarify each process.

For Year 10, Matt focused on structuring English essays by embedding quotes effectively and linking evidence to themes in "The Golden Age."

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Yasmine practiced plotting linear equations on a graph—finding coordinates and understanding why these equations form straight lines—by working through visual exercises together.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in Mathematics often avoided writing out equations and working, relying on mental calculations—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors. This made it hard to spot where his reasoning broke down.

In Year 11 English, a student repeatedly left homework incomplete and didn't use highlighters or mindmaps for essay planning, missing opportunities to structure arguments more clearly.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 struggled with consistently bringing required books to lessons, disrupting focus at the start of each session.

During a Physics assignment in Year 12, brief answers were submitted without detail, limiting depth and understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burnley noticed Matt now completes all his English homework ahead of time and uses planning tables and flash cards to organise ideas—previously he'd only write brief notes and needed prompting.

In Year 10 Biology, another student who once hesitated with project tasks started volunteering creative ways to build a plant cell diorama after some encouragement.

Meanwhile, Yasin (Year 12) is showing real independence: instead of waiting for solutions, he's begun applying physics formulas by himself during lessons and checking his own answers before asking for help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Gary is doing a great job and Emilee is really appreciative of their time together.

Carl has enjoyed working with both his tutors this year and is well prepared for his VCE math methods exams. Having a personal tutor, even for a student like Carl who is already achieving excellent academic results, has helped relieve some of the stress of VCE and enabled him to sort out areas he wanted to work on with more depth.

Bailey is really happy with Jackie, and so are we, he enjoys their sessions and I can see he is understanding much better.  Jackie is very courteous and punctual.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - FFV Burnley.
