Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. The students open up more to the teacher. This helps the teacher to plan on how to help the student. I can understand what the student needs. I can connect with the…

Something I believe is important is fostering a passion within the student for the subject, being the reason why someone starts to like something, become passionate, and work hard from their heart rather than from external sources. I would love to help students find genuine interest in Maths and Chemistry as much as I did. I try experimenting with…

Building a students confidence in a subject area is the most important thing you can impart as a tutor to a student. If you are able to build on the students confidence level in this particular area of difficulty you can break down any other barrier in relation to the difficulty they experience with this specific subject. As a teacher I have first…

Patience and kindness. There is no learning without failure, and as an educator, the best thing you can do is to give your students an emotionally safe environment to fail in. I think helping students understand how to approach a question and learning how to discipline themselves is the most important. Constantly reminding them to complete their homework so we can go over their mistakes next time is also important in establishing a routine and will hopefully give them an incentive to do the same with school. I believe I…

I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be supportive. Even the students struggling the most always have something they're doing well. The tutors job is to highlight that and develop skills to transfer those proficiencies to other areas of the subject. Furthermore the tutor must be patient. I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, but should guide the student to reaching that solution and ensure that they are able to understand the necessary steps. They should also be able to change the way they teach according to the needs of their students, as not everyone learns the same way. A tutor should be…

I think patience is the most important skill a tutor can have. Some students don't understand a concept right away, I had to have a concept explained to me multiple times before and if the tutor was patient I was not scared to ask. I think as I have been tutored before I knew what worked for me and what didn't so I could apply those ideas. This…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to tailor their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each student. For example, I work with a student who has mild ADHD and struggled with maintaining focus. To address this, I incorporated short physical activities, such as star jumps, into our sessions every 15…

I believe that a tutor should be extremely cautious in what they say; can everything be supported with a logical statement? Because the steps the tutors take to construct the answer are how the students learn from them, a tutor must prepare well and be confident and knowledgeable of what they are giving to the students. It's not about providing…

Inside Carss ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ava focused on graphing linear equations and finding the equation of a line using coordinates, practising both plotting and algebraic representation.

In Year 9, Liam worked through applications of Pythagoras' Theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems, reinforcing understanding with real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Max tackled complex addition and subtraction with larger numbers and began exploring foundational multiplication skills through step-by-step practice and targeted homework tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra progress was held back by not reviewing classwork between sessions; as one tutor noted, "I end up having to spend the next week covering what I went through the previous week."

In Year 6 maths, a student often forgot methods taught for long division and multiplication, especially when notes were misplaced or left incomplete.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 English, homework wasn't finished and new vocabulary wasn't practiced in sentences—leading to less confidence during spelling activities.

Inattentiveness and distraction during lessons also caused missed instructions in both primary maths and secondary English.

Recent Achievements

One Carss Park tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with chemistry calculations now solving titration questions accurately after just one practice session.

Another high schooler, previously anxious about timed writing tasks, recently wrote a full TEEL paragraph under time pressure and even volunteered to read it aloud—something she avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recall multiplication facts now completes smile-method long multiplication almost independently, correcting her own errors before being prompted and even choosing tougher questions for extra practice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Hurstville—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blakehurst Public School.
