I think the single most important thing is to help the student build confidence. The tutor is there to assist and guide the student but the student ultimately needs to be able to succeed on their own. A good tutor will clarify and explain concepts but ultimately their goal should be to motivate and guide the student. I think one of my biggest…

Since the tutor acts as a role model for the student, the most important thing a physics tutor can do is to take this opportunity to act as a mentor. By taking this role on board, the dynamic increases and the tutor can effectively teach. My greatest strength is patience and empathy. I have noticed the smartest tutors are not the best tutors. Poor…

Helping to approach the problems from different perspectives, that makes the student get more independency regarding the subject to solve future problems by himself. I think my experience helping people individually and in groups is a strenght I acquired, as well as the knowledge I have from my studies in different universities. That has given to…

The most important things a physics tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable and to help them feel like learning is not a chore but a good experience. Being positive, patient and encouraging is also a very important trait for a tutor. I have a lot of experience in nannying/babysitting so, therefore, have the ability to…

I believe that tutors must be role models for their students, both academically and in general circumstances. Being punctual, strong communication and a hard work ethic are all apart of these characteristics that make up a good role model for a student. Aside from being academically strong, tutors must also be able to understand their tutees…

Helping them learn by themselves is one of the most important hings a physics tutor can do along with laying a good foundation for them to fall back onto when they move on to higher studies. I am a confident person and can express my thoughts, i am patient and good at problem solving which means that I can better help the students solve their…

I think enthusing students to form a love of learning is one of the most important things a physics tutor can do. If students are not excited to learn and lack confidence then I think a tutor has failed. I am a positive and patient person with great communication skills. I think these are vital strengths for a tutor to have as it can help the…

I think simply put a physics tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in…

As a physics tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you…

I believe a physics tutor can do for a student is to help them in any possible way. I have worked as a private tutor and I believe that there are a wide range of things a tutor can do for a student. First is to be able to teach well and not be too harsh on the student as it creates discouragement. Being able to communicate and be patient will…

I believe a physics tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

Inside ClovellyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Oliver focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as simplifying mixed and improper fractions.

For Year 9, Ava worked through compound interest calculations and compared simple versus compound investments using value tables.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jack tackled factorisation methods in algebra along with more complex problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by applying factorisation strategies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling trigonometry found multi-step sine and cosine rule questions challenging when working alone; the tutor noted, "he needed guidance to find relevant angles," revealing a struggle to persist through complex problems without support.

In Year 11 Maths, worded income tax and commission problems proved overwhelming—questions with dense text led to missed steps and confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's written work remained difficult to follow due to unorganized note-taking in probability tasks: "notes were scattered across the page."

Not putting pen to paper during homework left gaps that made it tough for tutors to pinpoint sources of confusion.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clovelly noticed a Year 9 student who used to avoid asking for help now openly requests clarification when stuck, especially with factorisation questions—an important shift from silent guessing.

In Year 11, one student recently corrected their own homework errors after carefully reviewing feedback, showing genuine independence that wasn't there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who had struggled with long division earlier in the year has begun explaining solution steps out loud while working through problems and now completes them confidently without guidance. Last session, they finished an entire worksheet alone.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

So far so good with Stephen ... Charlie has really taken to him and we are very happy with him and the work he has done so far.

Carla is very happy with Aisling. We are gratefull that she is able to assist us.

Alec is really enjoying his sessions with Matt. He finds Matt funny and easy to get along with. Alec tells me he has already started learning things he didn't know. We are very happy so far with Matt.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
