A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. A tutor should also create a safe environment where the student feels they can ask…

I believe a tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and personal…

A tutor is solely responsible for shaping a students life. I consider the tutor to be committed in understanding what type of student he/she handles, since all of them aren't the same. Analyzing the talents of students and guiding them in a friendly way, will definitely motivate them to perform better. The teacher must be strong with the subject,…

The most important things for a student to develop and learn that a tutor can give to a student is support. By building a strong mentor relationship with the student, we can help build confidence in the student to develop their academic and interpersonal skills by providing them support. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster a positive learning environment, and tailor explanations to their individual needs. It's crucial to help students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as this is when real learning happens. As a tutor, I think my strengths lie…

I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. Put yourself in the situation. Think about what you would do as someone who is supposedly better at tackling difficult problems if you stumbled upon the same question. Then convey your thinking to the student. I am patient and I am good at predicting what student may find difficult in a certain exam/test. I am also adaptive to individual dilemmas…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Naturally, it is expected for tutors to help students with breaking down the content into manageable concepts for the student to understand. However, aspects such as study…

Inside East LindfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student James focused on consolidating money calculations and tackling worded multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Trai worked through plotting linear equations from tables and practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages while also reviewing rounding strategies.

For Year 11, Mario completed exam revision by practising logarithm questions alongside trigonometry and quadratic factorisation problems to strengthen his understanding before assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, a student frequently left working out blank when solving money questions and converting cents to dollars; as noted, "we didn't have much time at the end to cover it," which led to confusion when reviewing.

In Year 8 algebra, another student avoided writing steps and often erased work, resulting in repeated sign errors—"he rushes his work and does not write down his working making it easy to make mistakes."

For a Year 11 probability test, incomplete homework meant weaker recall of methods for combinations; missing practice resulted in stumbling on exam-style tasks under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Lindfield noticed a big shift for a Year 10 student who, after struggling with bearings questions last week, managed to get nearly all of them right on her recent test.

Another high schooler showed real independence by solving for x without prompting by the end of the session—previously, he'd always needed step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to confuse fraction placement could now accurately order fractions himself, finishing up by explaining his reasoning out loud for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lindfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lindfield East Public School.
