Make them enjoy studying more, and imbue them with better study practices. Many students suffer from math anxiety or procrastination issues which hamper the effort they already put in. I'm quite patient and very willing to continually sit on a topic or point with a student until they fully understand it - which often happens for topics that are…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and understanding. It would be difficult for a student to grasp an understanding if their tutor was unreliable and easily frustrated. I am committed to my students, trying my hardest to ensure that they understand the content and flourish. Additionally, I am a creative…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

The most important things a tutor can do for a students is to guide them not only in subjects wise but as well as helping their personal problems if they are willing to share as it can affect their learning capabilities. Thus, communication is a first step that tutors need to establish between his/her students. What I'm confident in is my…

I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be interactive and encourage them to ask more and more questions. This makes the learning experience to be wholesome and complete. My strength as a tutor is that I can clear the basic concepts of students and teach them to approach the problem in a systematic and logical…

For a student, the most essential thing a tutor can do is imparting complete knowledge as half knowledge is dangerous. So, when a child is fully aware of something, he can be confident enough to explore more beyond his imagination. A tutor must be resilient enough to teach students in the best way. The strength of a tutor lies in his knowledge and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be absolutely encouraging in whatever the student wants to achieve in anything they are learning. It's important because that strongly affects the students drive and perseverance in mastering a certain subject. Ensuring that students aren't afraid to ask for help. It's vital that tutors reinforce the fact that we are there to help them and won't care at all if they make mistakes and that it's a necessary part of the learning process. This not only helps build a sense of rapport with the student, but it promotes efficient and effective learning. I think…

Give the student hope that they are able to do achieve something. By giving students hope, and belief that they…

Education is one of the most important assets one can possess. I believe that I serve an onus to the youth to teach and share ideas with them. As students are young, it is important to start them on the right footing early. - I am organised and able to deliver theory in a concise way. - I can accurately and precisely teach students while making…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student develop interest for the subject. Once the student is throughly interested in the subject, he/she starts to explore on their own. After that the tutor just needs to guide the student in the correct path and occasionally help with difficult problems. However this is not an easy task.…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
