The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, mentally (on an academic level) and emotionally. This includes ensuring that the student actually comprehends the work - rather than just saying so. Just as importantly, a tutor must be able to emotionally support the student, making sure they are comfortable enough to voice their…

Before starting the tutoring sessions, it is crucial to evaluate the student's current level of understanding of the subject matter. This allows the tutor to create a personalized plan to address the student's weaknesses and reinforce their strengths. Being patient and supportive is also essential. Learning can be challenging, and students may…

I think it is important to build confidence for students because there are some students that lack confidence because they are behind. Furthermore, creating a supportive, learning environment is equally important. Although academic improvement is a key goal, being in an approachable and supportive environment allows students to be more willing to…

Being able to tailor the teaching approach according to the student's needs as required. Not every student learns in the in a linear manner or same way as others, and that might make it difficult to process and learn content when in a big classroom. One of the most important jobs as a tutor is definitely to break things down and explain concepts…

I think as a tutor, if i manage to teach them the subject i am trying to teach and they completely understand the thing, i would be very proud of myself. It is very important as a tutor to know that the student has completely understood the current subject. I have a lot of patience. So i do not mind children asking me the same questions again and…

I think teachers should genuinely care about their students and their mental wellbeing, not just their grades. Moreover, teachers should always be patient and never lose their tamper no matter what. I am quite patient and I try to explain the solutions in multiple different ways. Also, I think teaching is a message that goes beyond the classroom…

I think communication skills are really crucial to ensure that the students are able to approach the tutor when they are struggling and do not neglect their struggle. Therefore, a tutor must be dedicated to finding a different set of questions for the students to practice and ensure they have a clear understanding of the subject. Moreover, a tutor…

The most important things a tutor can do are diagnose where a student is stuck, rebuild the concept from first principles, and scaffold practice until they can solve it independently. That means creating a safe, encouraging space where questions are welcomed; breaking ideas into clear, step-by-step explanations; using targeted examples and checks…

Tutors must have an understanding of how their students learn and be able to adapt to that teaching style. There are 2 most important things a tutor could do for their student. Being a role model, and making an impact in their studies. In my point of view, the most important things are: 1. Being able to distinguish the abilities of his student, 2. Finding the best language, method, speed, and as a whole an effective strategy to convey the materials to the student. 3. Being able to make a good connection so that the student feels calm and relaxed and at the same time…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
