This means equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to tackle challenges on their own, fostering a growth mindset, and providing ongoing guidance and support as they navigate their educational journey As…

Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. In school, teachers cannot take care of everyone and address everyone's learning need, but tutor can plan and design the lessons according to…

Based on my experience, I would love to help my students to find out the most appropriate study method for them. As I was in secondary school, science subjects were not my preferable subjects at all. I learnt it by heart and completely did not understand the theories behind at all. My method was not appropriate as it is more suitable for…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student would be to help them understand the concpet in their own way, I would make sure the student finds the path by themselves. My job would be to make sure they go in the right direction and of course, if the path the student took is incorrect, I would take a few steps back and explain the…

The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. What is also important is to make sure the students have fun while learning, for that will ensure that whatever they are…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. I believe that I am a tutor that creates a safe, encouraging environment where students feel…

Learn not to show annoyance…

The most important thing a maths tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really…

One of the important things a maths tutor should do is to convey the concepts in the most simplified manner with examples and practical usage, as students are usually more motivated to study a topic when they know its importance in the practical world, which is not always easy to see in maths. The other crucial thing is that a tutor should be…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a maths tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. A lot of students actually understand more than they think, but they might be anxious, unsure, or afraid of making mistakes. So I see my role as creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
