Consistency is the key to improvement in any area, and it’s one of the most important things that a tutor can provide for a student. With tutoring, practice is quite literally guaranteed, and the mere act of exposing a student to guided, one on one instruction in a subject on a consistent basis can make a serious difference in a student’s…

A student’s emotional state can significantly impact how well they learn and engage with the material. By creating a supportive and understanding environment, I help students feel more confident, less anxious, and more open to learning.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill confidence in them and encourage them to be determined. As a student myself, I understand feeling defeated but a good mentor will assure the student that it is okay to not comprehend things and to lean on them when they feel poor. I believe I am articulate. I explain…

The most important thing a tutor can do is inspire confidence and curiosity. My high school chemistry tutor had a huge impact on me. He made learning exciting and showed me it wasn’t just about memorizing facts. His enthusiasm and clear explanations made me want to pursue Chem Eng. Now, as a tutor, I aim to do the same for others. It’s not…

I believe building an understanding about the student and the ways in which they learn best is what separates a tutor from a textbook. The personal skills needed to determine that are most important as it then allows the customisation of learning. I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to develop their critical thinking ability, where the student learn to think for themselves, through which one could also effectively develop the art of asking questions and learning. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
