Giving the student the tools and forming the basis to improve themselves is crucial. I think forming the student's understanding for answering any sort of question whether it be in English or Maths is necessary for achieving marks that most students cannot gain. While for maths a lot of the questions are based around simply using a formula,…

A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

I believe my strengths are mathematical maturity, compassion, and my easy-going attitude. These allow me to understand a student's…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

Flexibility in teaching style is one of the key aspects of effective learning of student. Depending on the student performance, a tutor changes his techniques and approaches to enhance learning of student. A tutor must be a good listener, which can help to understand student's doubts. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
