I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to be patient with the student and try to understand why they find that specific problem or concept difficult. It is the tutors job to explain and teach so that it is easy for the student to understand. I am very understanding and patient. It is difficult to learn new skills and teachings,…

Have patience and make sure that the student actually understands what they're saying. It can be easy for students to just nod along and agree with everything so it's important they're honest with you and say something when they don't understand I think my strengths as a tutor is my patience and being able to find a way to teach something so that…

Furthermore, creating a supportive, learning environment is equally important. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel comfortable and capable of learning new things. Often tutoring can seem like babysitting, but if a tutor can make the student feel like it's an opportunity instead of a task, it helps the student put their best effort into learning. The tutor should also understand the…

Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

I think encouraging the student is the most important thing a tutor can do even more than results as if the student begins to become more inquisitive and enterprising in their own learning they will do better overall. As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. To conclude, having confidence…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
