I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear explanations, build their confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. A tutor should break down complex topics in a way that makes sense to the student, ensuring they truly understand rather than just memorize. Encouragement is also key—helping…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to provide insights, looking ahead at ones studies. With tutoring, practice is quite literally guaranteed, and the mere act of exposing a student to guided, one on one instruction in a subject on a consistent basis can make a serious difference in a student’s…

Before starting the tutoring sessions, it is crucial to evaluate the student's current level of understanding of the subject matter. This allows the tutor to create a personalized plan to address the student's weaknesses and reinforce their strengths. Being patient and supportive is also essential. To be understanding and patient in teaching, giving support when needed like notes, help in homework and emotional support. I had experience with several tutors who didn't treat their students well, so I personally try to avoid that and try to make my class fun and engaging. I think I am a patient tutor who will listen to the student's confusion…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel comfortable and capable of learning new things. Often tutoring can seem like babysitting, but if a tutor can make the student feel like it's an opportunity instead of a task, it helps the student put their best effort into learning. The tutor should also understand the…

I remember struggling with maths in my childhood, I used to hate it. This one tutor explained a concept that has stuck with me even till now. Give them confidence that they can succeed. I believe with that with the right mindset almost anyone can succeed. Often students just lack confidence in their abilities which results in less effort in the unit and thus worse results. I am passionate about what I do. I care about my job and the students I tutor. I want them to do well and I think…

Have patience and make sure that the student actually understands what they're saying. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
