My focus is always on life-long learning, not just in a particular subject or area, but rather on skills and mindsets that allow the students to grow, not just in academics, but in their lives. Hence, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and build these mindsets and approaches to learning. Definitely being patient with the…

Engage with the student at their level - understand that concepts and content does not always come easily, and be willing to understand the 'why' behind the students' mistakes rather than approaching their learning focusing purely on correcting them. I'm willing to approach problems with students' learning from different angles to find out how to…

Finding the best language, method, speed, and as a whole an effective strategy to convey the materials to the student. 3. The most important thing in tutoring is that the tutor should not force their way of thinking and understanding on the student, instead they should build up from the foundation of knowledge that the student already has, guiding them to find a solution that they can understand. This not only makes the learning process for the student more…

Additionally, having enthusiasm and a genuine passion for teaching is crucial. If a…

I think it’s the empathy. I believe that no one could know everything at the beginning, even myself. So an empathetic tutor, who knows what their students are experiencing and struggling with, definitely is more inspiring and more able to help students overcome the difficulties. I can work with children with enough patience. My delivery methods…

be compassionate with your students and believe in them. I believe students tend to believe a lot of what their teacher's think about them and they look up to their tutors. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
