I consider listening and adapting two very important skills that a tutor can apply during a session. Tutors are supposed to listen to the students, their needs, what they do not understand, what they do understand, and how they can understand it better. Therefore, we have to adapt the class according to what we see. I am a very optimistic person…

To inspire them, to teach them, to help them and to be a role model. We can have fun during activities and do serious work when we should. It is through the Tutor that the student will probably choose his field for his career, so the Tutor has to be really encouraging. My strength would be the ability to connect to the students, by building a…

I consider it important that tutors to personalise learning experiences for student. Every student has different approaches to learning and given that tutors have more flexibility to work with students outside their classroom, it's important that tutors account for students' various learning needs. For example, providing diagrams for students who…

The tutor can assist students with especific exercises or topics, but the most important thing a tutor can do is to assist students in developing their own potential. In that way, students will be able to learn how to approach their studies better, and become more confident. I am a very good listener, and also very good at exploring different…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is, by far, giving him the confidence that he/she is capable of learning anything they want in school. Without that confidence, it's not possible to move on and that's the first thing the tutor must help the student with. Secondly, after some confidence was acquired, the tutor must help the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. It is the primary responsibility of a tutor to help students strengthen their concepts and build strong fundamentals in subjects. In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

A good tutor will work themselves out of a job. This is because a good tutor will not only teach the student the content but also how to learn. Therefore the student will be able to become independent of the tutor and then be able to teach other students. I am able to explain concepts clearly and concisely in a number of different ways. Thereby…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
