1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

A tutor needs to provide support and consideration of a student's abilities, and empower the student to achieve beyond what they think they can achieve. In particular, for younger students, I believe that tutors can and will help to lay the foundational stones that will provide the driving force to empower students to their best. Even if a…

Listen carefully to how they think about the subject - what is it that they struggle with? Why do they like/not like the subject? What do they understand and what exactly do they need assitance with? As tutors we do not want to assume how students feel or what they do or do not know. Be a good listening ear for them and available when they need…

The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. In school classes where they are often one of many, they may find that the teaching style may not work for them and that they cannot achieve their goals. In a tutoring scenario, we are able to cater to them more specifically, to be intuitive about…

Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. I believe a tutor is not sole to enhance the academic excellence of a student, but to help the student to develop personal skills in their character and morals as well. In my opinion, a teacher is the bridge between a child and their growth to become an adult. The personal character traits, morals and ethics they learn from school and teachers…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student develop an interest in learning. The most important thing should be that a tutor treats their student with equal respect. Just because someone's older or further ahead in life doesn't mean that they command more respect. Everyone should be treated equally and with mutual respect. I also think the sessions should be made fun, the joy of learning should be expressed through the…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
