I feel the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student develop an interest in learning. Helping students be interested in learning helps develop good student learning habits and increasing willingness to learn, and is also an opportunity for the tutor to share their interests, being positive for both sides. As such I am a big fan of…

Aside from providing knowledgable academic skills that could be beneficial for a student's education, I believe that another important thing a tutor can do is create a safe and welcoming environment for students to encourage effective learning. I know first-hand that tutoring, especially with someone you may not know very well can be daunting,…

The most important thing should be that a tutor treats their student with equal respect. Just because someone's older or further ahead in life doesn't mean that they command more respect. Everyone should be treated equally and with mutual respect. I also think the sessions should be made fun, the joy of learning should be expressed through the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give the student guidance on how to deal with the problems and make them solve their problems in order for them to solve future problems by themselves. A tutor can also help them with the problems after they have tried to solve the problems with different techniques. My strengths as…

Understanding each and every student is essential as all students don't operate on the same frequency. According to me even though tutoring is taught in class of numerous students, it is more of a one is to one relationship rather than one is to n. Hence, Understanding students and diagnosing them accordingly, with regard to their individual…

Patience is really important for students. Providing positive feedback, reassurance and encouragement, even if they don't quite understand yet. Be supportive whilst you're teaching them, in terms of chatting to the student and making sure they're comfortable enough to tell you all parts of the problem that they're struggling with. If a tutor doesn't make the student feel comfortable and supported then they are less likely to get the most out of the tutoring. I am punctual and reliable so…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment in which the pupil feels encouraged to ask questions. Without a certain degree of security or familiarity, most kids are too nervous or shy to ask questions and thus are left with a minimalistic understanding of a topic, instead of the deeper understanding they could gain by…

I think the most important thing that tutor can do is to build confidence in student to solve any kind of problem in the exam. I believe if anyone clearly knows the concepts…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
