Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. Moreover, it is important for the tutor to align to the goals of the student and help them achieve that. I can explain difficult problems in an easy to understand manner. I explain…

Undoubtedly, the primary focus of a tutor is to be patient with their students. All respective students are different from one another. Which also means they learn differently. As a tutor, it is my job to understand each unique needs, challenges and learning style. With patience, any tutor can fully support the growth of a student, whether it be…

Help them to understand that they can learn. That they understand that teaching is one aspect of the education process and the other is learning. That all students have the capacity to learn especially if the teacher is prepared to apply their best effort to offering those students a way to understand the information. This can be assisted if both…

The important things a tutor can do for their students include making the subject enjoyable and empowering students to reach a point from where they can arrive at solutions on their own. The first and foremost task for tutors is to make the subject more enjoyable than what the students perceive it to be. Once the students start enjoying the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be present, understanding and supportive. A tutor should be someone a student can rely on for academic help as well as encouragement and motivation. By providing the resources, teaching, and guidance, a tutor should be able to empower their student and help them to feel confident…

My goal as a tutor is not to "teach" a subject; my goal is to help the student learn how to study and find their own path so that they can do it on their own without needing a tutor in the future. My main objective is for my students to eventually no longer need me. I always encourage my students to think about what they are learning, why they are…

Among the most important things a tutor can do for a student is that a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning style so that the student would be able to learn the material in a way that is analogous to their mode of synthesising knowledge. A tutor must do this all the while being open and kind and most especially warm towards the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. As a tutor, I believe I can help my students overcome any challenge they face in their studies, by teaching concepts in a way that they…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are build understanding, confidence, and consistency. Allow the student to make mistakes and correct those mistakes. Explain to the student that mistakes are a part of learning. Do not criticise but suggest improvements. Patience to deal with students at different levels is needed to tutor. Also, sufficient knowledge of the subject being tutored is necessary to tutor and to make the student confident…

I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show the student that through perseverance they can be good at the subject, and to appreciate the subject's content for what it is. If it's a correct match of a student and a teacher, then definitely a tutor can change the overall personality of his student and in turn learn from him as well. It's not only about grades and positions but about life changing lessons that a tutor can give to his students. I am dedicated and true to my students, and according to me this is the…

Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. In this case, it is important for the tutor to encourage students and create a supportive learning environment in a way that helps the student see their progress. It is also important for a tutor to guide the student through a question, rather than just…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure that the child fully understands the lesson, and finds purpose in it. A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and make learning feel approachable. When students feel supported and understood, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and take risks, which is where real growth happens! A great tutor doesn't just explain the content clearly; they also adapt to the…

Inside LilyfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia practised using Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths and worked on rearranging equations in geometry problems.

In Year 9, Keira focused on solving challenging trigonometry questions and reviewed her recent test on probability, also revisiting how to simplify and expand algebraic expressions.

Greta, in Year 11, concentrated on differentiation—covering the product, chain, and quotient rules—and extended this by finding derivatives of inverse functions during calculus practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to bring their maths homework, so written work was scattered and difficult to track—"work is in one place only if homework comes every lesson."

In Year 10, a student tended to skip writing out working for easier algebra questions; as noted, "she lost marks by just writing the answer or partial steps, especially in assessments."

Meanwhile, a senior biology student left assignments until the last minute. This led to rushed note-taking and incomplete reports. The pressure of unfinished tasks lingered into class discussions, making it harder to consolidate concepts and scientific terminology under time constraints.

Recent Achievements

One Lilyfield tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid showing her working now confidently writes out every step and explains her reasoning as she solves trig and algebra problems.

Another high school student, after struggling with quadratic equations, managed to solve for intercepts independently across all question types—a clear turnaround from earlier sessions where she needed significant prompting.

At the primary level, a Year 4 student surprised both himself and his tutor by not only understanding fractions on his first day learning them at school but also improving his timetables since last lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inner Sydney Montessori School, Lilyfield.
