Listen, understand, acknowledge, apply yourself, stay persistent and motivated Growing up with a younger sibling and tutoring her along with coaching soccer for young kids, I learned the importance of patience and turned it into one of my strengths. Everyone has a different preferred method of learning and everyone learns at their own pace so it…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and encouraging of the abilities they already have, while pushing them to learn and achieve as much as they can. I believe my biggest strengths to be my patience as a teacher, and my ability to tackle different problems from various angles. I find it better to spend time…

Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

Tutors should be able to make a student not feel bad for having trouble during lessons. I am always willing to listen. Teaching a student is not lecturing them and assuming that they are a sponge and can absorb everything you say. I believe that to teach a student well, you must be willing to listen to them, and understand how they learn so that you can provide the best learning experience as possible. I want to be a tutor so that I…

Inside MaribyrnongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophia focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers using visual models.

Year 8 student Jack worked through linear equations with two variables and practiced times tables for fluency.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mia tackled trigonometric ratios in right-angled triangles and applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve worded geometry problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was assigned Algebraic Fractions homework but left it incomplete, which slowed progress during the next session—he needs to finish the assigned homeworks on Algebraic Fractions.

In Year 11 Biology, one learner tended to rely on memorising definitions instead of connecting concepts using textbook readings and key terms; this led to difficulty answering deeper questions.

For a Year 5 student, written working was often skipped in multiplication problems: "thinks a lot in her head. Does not write working out," making it harder for her to catch errors or remember steps later.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maribyrnong noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now confidently voices questions when stuck—this change meant he could work through challenging algebraic fractions without guessing.

Another high schooler recently completed a matrix assignment entirely on his own and presented each step clearly for the first time, following earlier struggles with laying out his solutions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from needing hands-on support for two-digit addition to accurately solving three-digit problems independently and even explaining her steps out loud during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Primary School.
