Apart from conveying knowledge, the most crucial thing a physics tutor can do is to make students feel good about the subject they are studying. When students have a positive mindset and feel confident, they are more motivated and engaged in the learning process. I possess a strong foundation and deep understanding of mathematics. Moreover, I can…

I think communication is one of the most crucial skills. I believe every students, somehow, are capable of learning. So even though I don't have extraordinary skills to teach them, they will learn from my explanation. But I have to know where they are at the point of time to know exactly what and how I have to teach. Having an idea of what my…

I believe the most important things a physics tutor can do for a student can vary, depending on the student. For e.g I had a friend who's outlook on maths was very negative, he had despised it his whole life and every time we'd have maths h would just have a frown upon his face and his mood would change. I assumed this was because he had never…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a physics tutor, you know you have succeeded…

Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. Allow the student to discover rather than memorise - I understand that subjects such as Maths can feel overwhelming if given as rote learning. I believe a physics tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and…

Inside North BalgowlahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lilly focused on strengthening multiplication and division skills, using games like "Hit the Button" to build times tables fluency and then worked through strategies for remembering tricky groups such as 4s and 12s.

In Year 9, Amelie has been tackling Surds—simplifying, multiplying/dividing, and rationalising denominators—as well as consolidating her understanding of volume formulas in compound shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jerry concentrated on algebraic factorisation methods and revising equations in preparation for upcoming tests, often working through textbook exercises and practice questions to target weaker areas.

Recent Challenges

One student lost marks in a recent Year 8 Maths exam for not showing working and relying too much on mental calculations. As noted, "he said that he lost a lot of marks in his exam as he did not show his working out."

During algebra revision, calculation errors crept in when steps weren't clearly set out or the calculator wasn't used reliably.

In senior Physics (Year 12), another student's notes were described as needing better layout: "Her setting out—we will continue to practice good setting out so it becomes a habit." This led to confusion revisiting circular motion questions before assessments.

Recent Achievements

A North Balgowlah tutor recently saw Jerry, a Year 8 student, shift from rushing through algebra to slowing down and double-checking his work—he now catches his own calculation errors before asking for help.

Meanwhile, Clara in Year 12 has started tackling past exam papers independently and explaining her approach out loud when stuck, which marks a big change from earlier sessions where she hesitated to try new question types.

For a younger student, Lilly (Year 3) took real ownership of her times tables practice by showing how she fixed mistakes on "Hit the Button" and talking through what she learned each time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have been very happy with our tutor Sam and Charlotte has made great gains with her maths and her confidence has grown. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Sam for his patience and understanding. I would not hesitate in recommending Sam and your service.

Thanks for the past 4 years of tutoring first Kendra and then Graeme. We were very happy with Tamara indeed. She made a huge difference for Kendra's Maths results. She achieved what she required for entry to her course, and we are very thankful to Tamara for that. Not only was she an excellent tutor, but a lovely person too and the kids found her very easy to understand and got on very well with her. She made a good start with Graeme, he also has improved in his Maths, fortunately we started early with Graeme.

Thank you all for your professionalism, patience and humor when engaging with our daughter! Who can make Maths more fun? Frank can! Cassie has blossomed!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Farmhouse Montessori School.
