The most valuable thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them clear explanations of every topic and hence, be able to make significant improvements in their score at school. I believe my greatest strength as a tutor is patience. If the student told me to explain something, I would try my best to do that until I was told that my student…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is first and foremost to be patient and never give a student the feeling that he/she won’t be able to do a certain tasks or in general become better at a certain subject. Moreover you should be really flexible in the way you teach things, because everybody learns and understand things…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

A tutor needs to be able to correctly relay information to the student and teach in an understandable way. It is crucial that you teach your student in the way they learn and do whatever needs to be done to help them. As well as this, you need to be able to set goals to work towards with your student so that the time spent with them is worthwhile.…

Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.
