Help improve their self-confidence and self-reliance through introducing tools that will help the student foster healthy and effective study habits of their own. I am patient and I have no qualms in going over the same concept a couple times more if the student requires such help. I've found that I learn best with mnemonics and I try to introduce…

The most important thing a tutor can do is truly understand their student—how they think, what motivates them, and where they struggle. A tutor should be more than just an instructor; they should be a mentor and a guide, making learning feel approachable and even enjoyable. It’s not just about explaining concepts but also about building…

As I believe every kids learn best at their own method, I prioritise my student's preference and feedback on which way of learning they understands best. Moreover, I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. I like to teach students in a way that is interactive and not directive.I feel that the more students learn about the…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence and create a safe space for asking questions. Looking back, the best professors I had were those who encouraged independent thinking and went beyond the textbook. In the long run, this approach helps students become more adaptable, curious, and capable of…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

I believe the most important thing I should've done to my students is to…

The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

I want my students to be able not only to learn the given subjects/materials but also to learn how to learn. I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

Becoming a lifelong role model is crucial in supporting students. Many of them keep their issues hidden, and as adults, we may overlook or avoid addressing these concerns. Some students might not even recognize they have problems. Being a dependable role model and a safe space for them are among the most vital ways to help them. Patience: Having…

The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. Lisa, Seddon

Inside SeddonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mia focused on converting denominators to add and subtract fractions, as well as simplifying fractions for clarity.

In Year 9, Ethan practiced solving algebraic equations for x and reviewed strategies for factorising quadratic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby worked through the distributive law of surds in algebra and reinforced her understanding by graphing linear lines using different methods.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a barrier for one Year 8 student—"not attempted," the note read, which limited progress with dividing and multiplying by factors of ten.

In Year 9 algebra sessions, working out was sometimes kept in students' heads rather than on paper, so key sign errors or steps were missed ("pen to paper" needed).

A senior student brought neither book nor notes to revision, making it harder to practice manipulating equations and use feedback.

One Year 11 learner hesitated to check work after each step; small mistakes went unnoticed until the end, meaning extra time spent fixing avoidable errors.

Recent Achievements

A Seddon tutor noticed that one Year 11 student, after initially struggling with understanding the inflation formula and the difference between purchasing power and current value, began breaking down complex questions independently and set up a personal study log to track his progress—a big shift from needing step-by-step direction.

Another high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help now initiates discussions about challenging algebraic problems and has started keeping organised notes in a dedicated rules book.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often guessed spelling is now confidently rewriting definitions and reading them aloud after targeted literacy practice during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Mechanics' Institute Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Pilgrim Campus.
