The most important thing a tutor can do is to make sure the students like the subject, when the students do not like a certain subject due to hard to understand or some other factors, this will result in a repulsion of the subject and creating a negative impact on them. Once they are interested in the subject, this will make their studies much…

I aim to teach them in a way that empowers them to continue learning independently, so they can benefit long after our tutoring sessions have ended. My goal is to help them 'learn how to fish,' rather than just providing them with a 'fish' for the moment. I am very strict, but fair. I believe that I can connect with all types of students with my…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to enable students with confidence and competence to learn on their own. While defining content is important, the more value lies in challenging students to think, solve problems, and deal with challenges with resilience. It is the responsibility of a tutor to be able to instill curiosity,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and to give them time to grasp a concept. Different methods of teaching should be applied in order to keep the student interested. I am patient, understanding and kind. I will not a rush a student and will take however long they need to understand a concept. I can…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide individualised support to each student. Another important aspect is to…

Guide them through the solving process rather than simply providing answers. This helps them become more confident problem solvers. Always encourage…

I believe there are no stupid students, only those who could not find the right way to learn. Firstly, I think a tutor's duty is to guide their students to the most efficient and enjoyable study methods. Secondly, a tutor should offer their students the route they need to get to the answers rather than the answers only. I encourage my students to…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
