From my personal experience, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being their friend; not forcing their own way of approaching the topic, but rather understanding the view of the student and catering to that. Helping students to understand a concept, enabling them to answer questions with proper understanding, rather than…

I feel that a tutor should take the time to understand the student's learning style, strengths, weakness and goals. Basically, a tutor should tailor his/her approach to best meet the student's needs. Tutors can help students develop a growth mindset by emphasizing the importance of effort. Overall, the most important thing a tutor can do for a…

I think guidance is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. If you are looking for a tutor who will force-feed the answer to your children, I am not your person. But if you want your children to understand concepts and use higher-order thinking to solve their problems, then I can help. Another important aspect is patience.…

Allow them to understand I’m here to support them and grow their understanding in knowledge rather than add extra stress and judge them. I have tutored a range of students from year 2 to year 12. I have been in tutoring myself and have realised the stress sometimes tutoring can inflict on a student. My goal as a tutor is to try and allow the…

Full dedication, extra lengths to help plus the willingness to teach and apply more examples that they are familiar with (similar to what they already know)...to make it "practical". However, listening to the kids is the most important. Patience.....I always use practical examples to illustrate the fun of Mathematics and its usage in daily living.…

I aim to teach them in a way that empowers them to continue learning independently, so they can benefit long after our tutoring sessions have ended. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is the willingness of a tutor to support these students in their studies by giving them ongoing assistance and feedback, but also being able to help them with any personal issues/troubles they are having. Being a tutor is a truly unique role, serving as an intermediary between a teacher and a friend. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is being there for a student. A tutor should assess the student's strengths and weaknesses, and tailor their approach to meet the student's individual learning needs. I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. The first one is developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so that a student can confidently solve problems that they haven't encountered before or when no one is there to guide them. And the second one is fostering a positive learning environment,…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to identify effective pedagogical strategies based on the individual needs of a student. For example, identifying a suitable progression scheme (such as deciding how much emphasis to place on sub-topics, and how frequently to administer tests/quizzes) which helps the student cover the learning…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
