I think a tutor plays a significant role in making learning enjoyable. By making learning approachable, students can develop the enthusiasm to learn new things and allow for growth in their studies. I believe what matters is how much students understand the content and not just remembering how much they learn. I believe my strength is to encourage…

Help them to gain back their confidence. I mean from primary to middle school or even high school, the curriculum might be hard but not that hard that students could not pass it. I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. Further, a tutor should be organized and behave professionally to set out the aura of a good…

Provide a safe environment for them to question things. To teach students how to ask the right questions. Efficient questioning. To spark curiosity and interest, that they my also push themselves out of their own desire to learn more. And in doing all of this, will in turn build their self confidence. I think a tutor's only job is to motivate their students and let them develop their own interests in the subject.  I think once you motivate them and make them think about the subject on their own, your job is done.  From then on, it's a matter of aiding their intellectual journey.  And I think what enables tutors to fulfil that job is using…

Guidance. It's always guidance. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

Maria, Sunshine West

Inside SunshineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Vincent focused on area, volume, percentages, ratios, and mixed numbers in maths homework review, while also practising reading comprehension and grammar in English.

For Year 10 Arshdeep, the lesson addressed motion on an inclined plane by breaking down gravity into components and calculating net force, as well as exploring the role of tension and drag forces using diagrams.

In Year 12 Chemistry with Ruby, revision included balancing ionic equations, identifying functional groups such as alkanes and alkenes, and applying mole calculations to empirical and molecular formulae.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student arrived for Chemistry without their class notes or materials, which made it harder to address gaps in ionic equations and electron configuration—he had significant gaps that will require further study.

In Year 8 Maths, one learner's workbook was disorganised and missing homework, so practice with fractions and column addition could not be checked.

A VCE student tackling comparative essays sometimes avoided using feedback on structure, leading to repeated confusion over evidence selection.

During a senior Methods session, rushing through complex number problems led to overlooked details; time was lost fixing these instead of moving ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Sunshine tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 physics student who, after weeks of staying quiet, finally started asking for help with concepts like time dilation—he now explains his reasoning out loud instead of guessing.

Another high school student working on comparative essays initially struggled to plan ideas but recently began mapping out argument structures independently, which is new for her.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to avoid reading tasks volunteered to read the next chapter aloud during their session and tackled unfamiliar words by sounding them out without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception School.
