The most important thing I can do for a student is to be patient. Patience is key in facilitating the process of learning as it removes the anxiety inducing pressure of expectation and allows the student to solely focus on the content at hand. Patience also allows the student to rationalise concepts at their own pace. This has the effect of deeply…

A tutor must be able to reinforce the foundational theories and concepts taught in school and from there guide their student through the ways in which this information can connect to a wide range of questions. Exposure to a myriad of problems improves a student's ability to recognise how their own knowledge connects to a solution and thus their…

The most important thing you can do for a student (other than teaching them the things they are struggling with) is letting them know they aren't as "stupid" as they may feel. So many students enter tutoring frustrated, upset and not wanting to be there because they believe that they are "stupider" or "dumber" than their friends because "well my…

I believe the most important things I can do as a maths tutor for my students is to to make them feel like they can do anything that they struggle with. It is important that students are able to express what they struggle with without the fear of being judged or humiliated. They need to know that just because they're struggling with something does…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to understand the needs of their student and develop effective resources that work for THAT student. It is also important to recognise what kind of work load people are capable of handling so that you do not overwhelm them with tasks, as this would be counterproductive. So I guess,…

Create a supportive and positive learning environment: It’s crucial to establish trust, where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A positive, encouraging atmosphere helps boost their confidence and motivation. I think a strength I have as a tutor is communication. As it assists me in breaking down concepts into…

The most important thing a maths tutor could do is create a safe environment for the student. Learning can be more comprehensive and explicit once the student is comfortable around their tutor’s presence. The tutor also must maintain and adhere to an elaborate study plan to help the student. I am very patient and would never snap even on being…

Support and patience. Trying to force too many things at once can only frustrate somebody attempting to better themselves, following a pace the student is best learning at is crucial. Frustration and not grasping an idea or a concept can lead to giving up, which is why support and again patience are key. I'm reliable, patient and easy to talk to.…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to not only understand where the student is at within their academics, but in their personal life as well. A student's schooling can be very stressful and there is a lot of pressure from others. My role would be to make sure that I am not pressuring them, and that we reward…

Personalise the students lesson towards their learning perspectives and needs. Not every student is the same and nor will they learn the same. its important to be adaptable, and use different approaches when needed to for the maximum success of the students learning. Tutors cannot think for their students, but what they can do is guide their students to an understanding. This means facilitating understanding by providing a space for students to ask their own questions, receive helpful answers, and be guided through any difficult topics. I believe tutors must teach alongside students by teaching them strategies…

Nathan has helped me gain confidence and knowledge in chemistry. Evidently, his extensive guidance had improved my rank of 103/108 in year 11 to rank 20 in year 12. I am grateful for his unwavering support and dedication to my education.

Inside WatanobbiTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ruby worked on understanding place value in numbers up to the thousands and practiced long addition with carrying.

Year 8 student Simran tackled simultaneous equations and algebraic inequalities, focusing on clear step-by-step solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam deepened his grasp of trigonometry by working through right-angled triangle problems and reviewed linear inequalities using number line diagrams.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student ran out of time on inequalities, leaving several questions incomplete and missing opportunities to review mistakes—"he tends to forget the steps after eagerly doing them," a tutor noted.

In Year 8 algebra, confusion between indices and multiplication repeatedly slowed progress, especially during revision sessions.

A primary student in Year 3 struggled with carrying numbers in long addition, making written work messy and hard to check later.

Another senior student skipped showing full working in simultaneous equations; this made it harder to spot where errors crept in when checking answers at the end of class.

Recent Achievements

One Watanobbi tutor noticed a big shift in Josh, a high schooler who had previously struggled with algebra—he now confidently applies the substitution method to simultaneous equations and can explain where he used to get stuck.

In another session, Josh independently solved complex surd problems within binomial products after weeks of hesitation.

Meanwhile, Ruby (Year 3) surprised her tutor by quickly figuring out multiplication order, a leap from needing repeated demonstrations just two lessons ago.

Most recently, she chose to tackle a new times table on her own and explained her memorisation strategy without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tuggerah Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wyong Public School.
