Taking the time to step back and better understanding your child's best learning method is important for a tutor. Without doing so, I believe improvement would be far harder. Putting in the extra effort to gain this knowledge alongside, the student's existing areas of weakness is highly valuable. As a tutor, I offer quality communication skills…

I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to truly understand them and their learning ways. For example, I am a visual learner and so I learn better using diagrams, colours and videos. But not everyone is a visual learner and so they might need other aids to help them learn concepts such as songs or textbooks. I…

One of my tutors in Year 12 told us that confidence is the most important thing a student can have. This has proven to be true in my experience. Once I gained confidence in my knowledge, I was able to experiment with answering questions in different ways, deepening my understanding. Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

I believe a tutor is there to guide and support a student to their best of their ability so that they may achieve the goals that they wish to reach. Inside WestmeadTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on mastering long division and practiced rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.

In Year 7, Emily focused on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, tackling lots of practice questions to build confidence with these essential skills.

For Year 9, Jason reviewed algebra by practicing rearranging equations and expanding brackets, helping solidify his understanding for upcoming classwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, skipping careful checks during long division led to persistent calculation errors; as noted, "she needs to slow down and double check each step."

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided homework or completed it without effort—one session's work was "all incorrect" due to not reading instructions.

In Year 11 algebra, over-reliance on following memorised steps rather than understanding why those steps worked caused confusion when tackling new problem types.

For a Year 4 student, untidy written work made it hard to track mistakes and fix them, especially in times tables tasks. Missed homework and rushed presentation left key misunderstandings unresolved.

Recent Achievements

One Westmead tutor noticed a Year 8 student who used to avoid speaking up is now actively seeking clarification whenever she gets stuck, making it much easier to pinpoint misunderstandings early.

In a recent high school session, another student who'd struggled with algebraic expansion and factorisation was able to work through several challenging problems without needing step-by-step prompts—last term, he'd freeze at the first sign of difficulty.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4 made a leap by recalling all her times tables during practice, something she previously hesitated to attempt out loud.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

My daughter Jasmine has been tutored by Thomas Ban in maths for the past few years. She recently was accepted into the gifted and talented class for year 7 at Stella Maris and also received an "Outstanding" grade (highest grade possible) for Maths this year. We just wanted to thank Thomas Ban for the wonderful work he has done with Jasmine this year. We feel that she has received these grades due to Thomas tutoring. He has challenged and pushed her to work harder and improve her maths. He is also extremely professional and courteous.

Aryo is very happy with Brittany and looking forward to see her which is a good start !

I am confident that Mandeep's approach is just what Hugo and Havier need to lift their confidence and capabilities to be the best they can be.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wentworthville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parramatta Marist High School.
