I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is creating an environment and relationship which they feel both comfortable and willing to learn in. This can begin anywhere from allowing the student to ask any question and getting a respectful answer to being an easily accessible resource for the student so they feel…

I think a maths tutor should provide a fun, engaging and different approach to studying. A tutor should ask questions in a way a teacher hasn't got the time to do. They should always ask what the student wants and implement strategies as to how to attain these goals. But, perhaps at the forefront of responsibility, a tutor should always make sure…

The most important thing for a maths tutor to be able to do is to help the student develop their own abilities, and give them study habits and practices in class that will help the student to deepen their understanding of the underlying principles being taught. A tutor must also be able to communicate with the student and explain problems in a way…

To be there for a student in a more personal and approachable way than the modern education system and its teachers can be, to help 'fill in the gaps' that the student may have missed in class and to be there for the student if they feel like the education system has failed them. A good tutor needs to have a variety of qualities in order to bring out the best in a student. Tutors need to be able to personalize learning, no two students learn the same and as such it would be incorrect to assume that the same teaching strategy will work for every student. Tutors should also not simply teach content to students, they need to…

I consider making the tutoring session a relaxed, relatively casual setting as one of the most important things a maths tutor can do. To make a student understand things in an easy way. And be there for the students. I can find one students area of interest and as well as weakness and can concentrate on it. Inspire. Children are an inspiration to their teachers. As mentioned before, children are an inspiration to me since I get to learn from them as much as they get tutored from me. Nadine, Woonona

Inside WoononaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Remi focused on multiplication and division homework, along with rapid-fire equations and tackling calendar/time questions.

In Year 7, Grace worked through algebraic expressions—collecting like terms and multiplying pronumerals—using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Sam practiced applying the Pythagoras theorem to exam-style problems and reviewed rates and ratios using sample worded questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student hesitated to complete homework and avoided reading assigned texts, showing reluctance especially when tasks fell outside his interests.

In maths, he resisted writing out working—"he believed the answer to be enough by itself"—which led to errors being missed during revision.

During a senior lesson, exam pressure left one student overwhelmed, causing him to forget previously learned content while tackling new algebraic topics.

Meanwhile, a primary-aged learner struggled with focus and sometimes skipped steps in subtraction exercises, particularly when distracted by drawings or after a stressful school day; this made consolidating core skills more difficult.

Recent Achievements

During a Woonona tutoring session, a high school student, Max, shifted from brushing aside spelling and writing tasks with defeatist comments to independently revising his English drafts—tackling larger words and recount writing without giving up.

Another tutor noted a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on hints now reworking missed exam questions solo and nailing the correct answers on his own.

Meanwhile, Remi in Year 4, once hesitant with word problems and basic addition, is now reading time questions confidently and flying through perimeter challenges—using finger counting openly after being encouraged that it's a valid strategy.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I would like to commend Mandy on her fantastic work with Jack.  She has been so patient and we could not have asked for a better match with our son. Their hard work has paid off as we have received several comments from Jack's  teacher telling us how well he is going in maths and that there has been an improvement.

The experience has been great and the results speak for them self. My son gained confidence as a result of the tutoring and i would gladly recommend you to my friends and family. The tutor was very pleasant to work with and very approachable.

Raymond is fantastic and very professional, he is always punctual and Frank already feels like he really likes the way that Raymond does his maths explanations. Thank you so much, it's going really well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Woonona Public School.
