I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student's confidence and independence. It's not just about solving problems for them, but teaching them how to think critically so they can solve future problems on their own. A tutor should also create a safe and encouraging environment where the students feel comfortable asking…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor lessons to their unique needs, and create a supportive, encouraging environment. A tutor should inspire curiosity, help students feel comfortable with mistakes as part of learning, and celebrate their progress, no matter how small. It's also…

For me, the most important thing to do as a tutor is not only help teach class content, but share study skills, time management, note taking tips, and other ways to manage the Year 12 workload. Year 12 is not purely about knowledge, but handling pressure and staying on top of work, and I hope to communicate my experience in this. Throughout my…

I think it is important to offer a new perspective and respect for the subject they are learning. They might have had a distaste for the subject simply because they find it difficult or lack confidence, but hopefully, through my tutoring, they can come to enjoy learning and expanding their knowledge. I give clear and concise explanations and have…

To teach them the concepts and equip them with the necessary skills to understand new ideas, which will be helpful for all students in their education journey. To motivate them and push through challenges, not giving up easily when they are faced with problems. To give them the right guidance, such that the hard work of the student can allow…

As someone who has received tutoring before I know the difference a good tutor can make to help bridge the gap between your current self and where you want to be. I will be able to go over what questions they have got incorrectly before and specifically target the students weaknesses to make them overall stronger. Additionally I can specifically…

Help them understand their school work and help them enjoy. To take away that fear of being left behind or that doubt in themselves. For them to know that by hard work they can improve. I am very patient with kids because I know how difficult Math can be. I try my best to think of ways to explain Math concepts simpler for them. Seeing them doing…

I believe the two most important things a tutor can do for a student are to make sure they feel comfortable enough to open up about their difficulties and tailor the lessons to their needs in a way traditional school classes can't. As any tutor should, I try to make my lessons as informative and engaging as possible. However, I believe my…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to teach a step by step method and mindset which can be applied to all problems, varying across subjects as well as life. I believe that I can quickly understand most problems and apply my own knowledge so that I can clarify or explain in an efficient way so as to help the student…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him confident in the subject he is struggling with. To understand and sympathize with his problem, and to effectively guide him to success, is one of the most valuable roles of a tutor. A teacher’s role is not solely to raise a student’s grades, but rather to help the…

All the students in a class do not have the same level of understanding, so the teacher needs to be very patient to make sure that all her students are carried along. That no student is made to feel less than others despite his/her performance. A teacher should constantly encourage her student to be better. A teacher should continually liven the…

Help them understand what they're doing. I feel like my years throughout school were more directed to knowing the methodology to get good grades but not having a proper understanding of the way things worked. Being a bit older you look at things in a different way, and I feel like if they start understanding the subjects properly from a young age,…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is not only passing on the knowledge to the student but to also activate the student’s desire to learn by themselves. This includes the desire to search for the answer and to overcome the problems. We are not spoon feeding the student the information. There is an old saying “Give a child a…

There are a number of short-term and long-term goals I have for my students/mentees: In the short-term, I seek to make material engaging and more easily digestible. Students should see an immediate benefit from having concepts explained by a supplemental source in several different forms. In the long-term, and perhaps most importantly,…

Patience is especially important when working with younger children, who often struggle to concentrate for long periods. From my experience with kids under 10, I’ve learned that making lessons engaging and interactive is key to maintaining their focus and interest. Using creative methods and breaking down complex concepts into simple, relatable…

Inside ClovellyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Oliver focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as simplifying mixed and improper fractions.

For Year 9, Ava worked through compound interest calculations and compared simple versus compound investments using value tables.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jack tackled factorisation methods in algebra along with more complex problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by applying factorisation strategies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling trigonometry found multi-step sine and cosine rule questions challenging when working alone; the tutor noted, "he needed guidance to find relevant angles," revealing a struggle to persist through complex problems without support.

In Year 11 Maths, worded income tax and commission problems proved overwhelming—questions with dense text led to missed steps and confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's written work remained difficult to follow due to unorganized note-taking in probability tasks: "notes were scattered across the page."

Not putting pen to paper during homework left gaps that made it tough for tutors to pinpoint sources of confusion.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clovelly noticed a Year 9 student who used to avoid asking for help now openly requests clarification when stuck, especially with factorisation questions—an important shift from silent guessing.

In Year 11, one student recently corrected their own homework errors after carefully reviewing feedback, showing genuine independence that wasn't there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who had struggled with long division earlier in the year has begun explaining solution steps out loud while working through problems and now completes them confidently without guidance. Last session, they finished an entire worksheet alone.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
