I think improving a student's confidence is the most important thing. I've just seen so many students in the past give up when they see a problem, but if you can teach them to push past this it helps them in this class and in future problem solving scenarios. I make tutoring fun or at least I try my best :) I will make jokes and generally try not…

The most crucial aspects for a tutor are clear explanations, creating a supportive environment, and adapting to diverse learning styles. It's vital to convey that making mistakes is part of learning, fostering confidence, and dispelling any intimidating image of a teacher to create a comfortable and open learning atmosphere. Patience, effective…

To reiterate, I think personalization is a key facet of good tutoring. Every student is likely to have different needs and learning styles, and it is important to adapt course material and teaching style to best suit their needs, while clarifying concepts effectively and accurately. Also, making the concept/subject appear less daunting and more…

As a tutor, I believing reviewing older concepts and understanding what the student needs from me is most important. Rather than correcting their mistakes, it is important that I allow the student to work it out and learn their concepts thoroughly to avoid any future confusion. I try to explain concepts in the simplest way possible and slowly…

The most important thing is to inspire confidence and a love for learning. It's not just about teaching the material but also about empowering students to believe in their own abilities. A tutor should create a supportive environment where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process, encouraging curiosity. As a tutor, my strengths lie in my…

I think encouraging the student is the most important thing a tutor can do even more than results as if the student begins to become more inquisitive and enterprising in their own learning they will do better overall. I think I am patient and am willing to adapt my explanations to the student and their strengths as opposed to giving a standard…

Tutors should establish a friendly student-teacher bond which makes students comfortable and they feel safe to approach you for doubts. Failure to do so can make students feel intimidated and this can impact the teaching negatively. Tutors should also make sure that all the students in the class are following the things taught, because every…

Tutors should not immediately give students what they want. Providing answers is the easy path for both tutors and students, but then the solutions will always be mine, not the student's. I am not going to simply give them fish; I will teach them how to fish. I have varied experience, not just in, not only in the education sector but also in a…

1)As a tutor it is very important to understand student's personal needs and cater studies according to that. Get to know them, take few counselling sessions as that would help in getting to know students in a broader way. 2)Be Creative-It is very important for a tutor to be creative. Explaining the same topic in different ways makes a lot of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel genuinely safe and unembarrassed about not knowing something. Once that pressure is gone, they’re actually able to think, ask questions, and learn. A good tutor also pays attention to how a student thinks - not just what they get wrong - and adjusts the explanation to fit…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
