The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster a positive attitude toward learning, and tailor teaching methods to suit their needs. A tutor should break down complex concepts into simpler terms, encourage critical thinking, and provide a supportive, patient environment where students feel comfortable…

The most important thing a tutor can do is inspire confidence and curiosity. My high school chemistry tutor had a huge impact on me. He made learning exciting and showed me it wasn’t just about memorizing facts. His enthusiasm and clear explanations made me want to pursue Chem Eng. Now, as a tutor, I aim to do the same for others. It’s not…

Explain information in a way that the specific student can understand. Once again, up to secondary years of mathematics there certainly is not one way to explain and eventually solve problems. I was always more inclined to be self-taught when it came to maths in secondary school as I often found the ways it taught to be confusing and…

To build a student’s confidence in the subject is to solve half of their problems for them. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive, encouraging environment and to build the student's confidence. It’s essential to make sure the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes because that’s…

Engage with the student at their level - understand that concepts and content does not always come easily, and be willing to understand the 'why' behind the students' mistakes rather than approaching their learning focusing purely on correcting them. I'm willing to approach problems with students' learning from different angles to find out how to…

To me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and provide personalised support. A tutor should help students develop critical thinking skills and encourage them to take ownership of their learning that they may not find in class. By creating a positive and encouraging environment, a tutor can make…

Empowering the student is the most important thing I can do as a tutor. It is clear to me that my goal is not for the student to be dependent on me as a tutor. But, I am there to help and guide, to support and mentor, so that the student becomes capable and confident to do things on their own and progress further. Empowering someone else is not an…

Patience and stand in their point of view. Because kids have their own opinions and there is not wrong in their points even if the points in the adult's view is not accessible. All we can do that is be patience to listen and consider their opinion and give advice. Communication. I 'd like to share the information to the kids and like to talk to…

Have patience and make sure that the student actually understands what they're saying. It can be easy for students to just nod along and agree with everything so it's important they're honest with you and say something when they don't understand I think my strengths as a tutor is my patience and being able to find a way to teach something so that…

To be understanding and patient in teaching, giving support when needed like notes, help in homework and emotional support. I had experience with several tutors who didn't treat their students well, so I personally try to avoid that and try to make my class fun and engaging. I believe building an understanding about the student and the ways in which they learn best is what separates a tutor from a textbook. The personal skills needed to determine that are most important as it then allows the customisation of learning. Because my understanding of concepts are very logical, I am able to give explanations depending on…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to develop their critical thinking ability, where the student learn to think for themselves, through which one could also effectively develop the art of asking questions and learning. Tutors should establish a friendly student-teacher bond which makes students comfortable and they feel safe to approach you for doubts. Failure to do so can make students feel intimidated and this can impact the teaching negatively. Tutors should also make sure that all the students in the class are following the things taught, because every…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as a guide in finding their way around the challenging problems. Moreover, tutors acting as guides also meant that if students are…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
